HI Oz XJers...I've got a 1985 XJ900 work in progress which I ride each day. Bought it from the wreckers complete about 3 years ago and have spent a "bit!!!" of time fixing the electrics (who hasn't?), cylinder hone, new rings and a general spruce up. Still has reasonably good original black/red paint job but with an unusual full fairing. All that's left are the cosmetics and a new paint job to make it look as good as some on this site.

I live in Fitzroy area, Melbourne.

Add another Aussie to the list.

Just bought an XJ900 as a project and have not even completed a list of to do's yet. Long way to go but I'll post a few photos along the way.

    Based on Sydney's northern beaches.

    G'Day Andrew,

Any recommendations on parts suppliers or wreckers. I've used the guys at Action for some basic stuff but will need a fair few items over the coming months. I'd love to find a wrecker to as I want to see if an XJ900N tree will fit my XJ900R frame - that way I can get ride of the ugly bars the PO put on and find some risers and drag bars.

    Cheers,
    oby

Hi folks I'm based in Ipswich Qld as far as parts go I could do with some tips as well.
Need carb diaghrams and does anyone know where to get that belly pan that came out with the XJ that I've never seen on one on the road.
Sorry 83 XJ750 is my beast.
Had an 82 as my first big bike maybe I'm having a midlife crisis.

    Hi Guys
I have found Brisons M'cycle wreckers here in Sydney very helpfull for parts.
My best find to ate is a guy in NZ that makes an after market TDI unit & cheaper than getting your reconditioned locally. I found him on ebay.

Parts diagrams can be found on Yamaha USA web site , dates & model designations differ slightly but you can usually get one thats pretty acurate.

I also have a belly pan of an 84 model XJ900 at this stage I haven't decided if I still need it.

I'm turning my 900 into an old school chopper.

    Cheers
    Andrew

Hi from Hot 'N' Dry Koorlong. (Just out of Mildura, right up in the top corner of Victoria). picked up my 84 XJ900 late October after a 12year dry spell of riding. (Just changed jobs, must be a midlife crissis like everyone else) other than a local XJ1200 (FJ?) i haven't seen any others this model with a full fairing, usually only a bikini and a bottom. Are these common?

Heres a photo I found in the gallery with the bellypan.knuts2a I dont think they came with a full fairing but I know that you could buy that middle panel between the bikini and bellypan aftermarket.I'm no expert but thats what I remember.

    http://xjbikes.com/coppermine/displayim ... ize=1.html
Shamus that does look like that belly pan doesn't it,but with the exchange rate between the oz dollar and the euro she could be a real expensive mistake!

Hey everyone. I know this isn't the right thread for this, but I figured maybe I could get your attention here.

I'm thinking about doing a trip to Australia in which I ride a long distance across the country. Now, I know that I can't really go across the middle, but I'm looking for other suggestions about what a cool itinerary might be that would take me "across" the country.

The plan is to pick up a bike in one big city, ride for several weeks, then sell the bike in another city before flying out. Other than that, I'm open to suggestion.

    Any thoughts?

Depending on the bike you want to do it on dictates where you can go. Eg, you can go across the middle on a dual purpose bike while carrying minimal extra fuel. WOuld not recommend it alone though.

If you only have a few weeks then I would look at running up or down the east coast. Say, Cairns to Sydney. Perth to Sydney is a good ride but has a fair bit of boring riding for the first week.

All dpends on how many hours a day you want to spend in the saddle. ;-)

As Hired Goon says alone across the middle, not really a good idea even for the experienced traveller.
The East Coast alternative would be a great trip though depending on time Melbourne to Cairns or as suggested Sydney to Cairns pretty country most of the way and you can pretty much follow our only mountain range for a lot of it[mountains with a small m compared to what you may be used to].
The dual purpose bike would add a lot of great alternative routes as well.

Let me know how you go with your project. I'm awaiting some parts for my engine rebuild from Chacal and a crew in the Netherlands, but hopefully once they arrive I can get back to rebuilding instead of debuilding.

As my bike was part modified by the PO, I intend on taking it further. Plan at the moment is a cruiser/street fighter style. Modern cruiser at the rear but more aggressive front end styling with drag bars and street fighter lights.

I have to lower her a bit as I'm a short arse, but otherwise I have parts for 90% of the rebuild, so I'm just waiting to get the engine parts.

Plenty of 900's in the southern hemisphere :)

I've got a fairly decent collection of spares across the ditch... Let me know if you have trouble finding anything... I have lots of small bits and pieces from random footpegs to headlights... Sorry Oby, no engine parts :)

Like the guys said up the east coast, but I would start in Adelaide so you take in the great ocean road, then up the coast until you see salty crocs, then go home.

    Hiya Pygmie....

I'm going to disagree with most people here I think. If I were you I wouldn't concentrate on the East Coast too much. So saying that W.A is along way and I haven't been there. I have however been many other places. Now my ideas depend on whenm and how long your staying but I think it's worth considering the general concept,

If I were you I'd fly into Brisbane... rideup to Far North QLD....(As far as you can go...it's stunningly beautiful there...but I'd do it in winter 'cause riding in the rain sucks and so does swimming with box jellyfish).

Yes.yes...I hear you say.. That's the East Coast!!!!! 8O

It's an amazing ride across to Alice Springs from North Qld and not too dangerous with a little planning (Calculate fuel usage and carry extra as well as plenty of H2O) Then from Alice, head south to Adelaide, across to Melbourne along the Great Ocean Rd and get a ferry across to Tassie (Which is a phenomenally beautiful place which many people overlook).

Well, after writing all this I didn't actually look at the date of your posting, however this may be useful to someone else so I'll still hit the Submit button.....now
