Hi everyone, I have an 83 xj650 and I'm having an issue with the bike idling super high when I clutch in when I'm riding. If I put the bike in neutral the RPMs will start to climb up the like 3000 and then clunk hard when I put it first. It seems to happen almost anytime I start to clutch in when the bikes warm the RPMs will climb. I have been recently searching through the forum and I can't seem to find anyone who has posted about this issue. Does anyone have any ideas ? II'm a young dude and not very experienced with motorcycles but pretty mechanically inclined but I have already learned alot working on this bike I'm just very confused why this is happening

Hi, it could be a lot of things but very likely related to a carby issue. Has something been changed on the carbies or was it running fine before? If it was running good before then it might be just the carbies needing a good clean up.

Vaccuum leak...check the carb to head boots, or throttle shaft seals

Or the boots themselves.. Or the little rubber caps on the vacuum ports.

first thing to check is the idle screw, its situated between carbs 2 and 3 underneath , its a screw with a knurled end , back it off , then see what happens. if it cures the "racing revs" gradually feed it back in ,till it idles right

^^^ is the first step setting idle is a bit of a chore. if your bike is going to 3 k . Try adjusting the idle knob after bike is well warmed up set to 1k rpm.

also make sure your throttle cable is lubed and not binding properly adjusted.

then start looking for other issues

Make sure your carb cable is routed correctly as well as the coke cable and the tank is not interfering with cable , the throttle cable has an adjustment knob at the grip this can also effect adjustment.

Have you synced the carbs and set the fuel/air mixture using a colortune? Sync, colortune, and sync again. Mine was doing the same thing until I set everything.
