My nephew just got an 85 maxim x and I just didn't like how hot it runs in town. I know it's normal for the fan to kick on about in the red. Well I ride a 1989 vmax and it was the same way. I bought a low temp fan switch so the fan turns on alot sooner so now the temp never gets above half way ever. Well doing some research I fould that the vmax and the maxim x take the same stock fan switch, same yamaha part number and everything. So the vmax fan switch will work on the maxim. You can get the switch from vmaxoutlaw.com. That's where I got mine for my vmax. I'm gunna order on for the maxim also. Just thought I would share this since I have seen alot of people talk about how hot their maxim x runs.

I'll just run this idea up the flagpole - -

Somehow - hook the fan relay to the brakelite circuit.
When you are stopped, you can add some "fan" by just squeezing the front brake, if you feel you need it.

Might need a diode to do it right.

I know it seems expensive but after running it on my vmax it didn't seem so high. My vmax would fry you around town but after the new switch it runs so much cooler. I just ordered one for the maxim last night. I feel it's worth every penny just not to fry

(nodding) True... true. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have the same concerns as you about when the fan comes on. If I didn't have so many other things going on (a grunch of writeups, and the car needs work of its own) I might think about getting one.
