I have the rear set gear linkage on my XJ. There's a lot of slop in the various parts of the mechanism. I think I've found a local place where I can get a couple of rose joints to repair parts 11 and 17, but the lever (also part 11) slops about like the worn out thing it is.

I'd like to remove the pivot (part 14) from the engine casing, but it's proving obstinate; hitting it with a mallet isn't working. Is there a trick to removing it? I expect some sort of sleeve will have to be made and part 11 bored out to suit.

If you put a deep socket just big enough to go over the pivot or a section of pipe, on a solid surface and use a drift and a hammer from inside the case. Try some heat on it too first. I have not tried it but it might work.

There's a retaining circlip on the inside, (part 15) so I don't think that will work.

No it won't unless the clip can be removed.

It can't. The clip is recessed and must be fitted before the pivot is put into the casing. This means that the pivot has to come out on the inside.

Can you press the pivot out using a vice for example?

Can you find a replacement shift lever?
I have a low-miles one you can have but it is a bit rusty, and in Canada.

I could do, but I do not want risk cracking the casing; that's why I asked if there is some trick to removing it, having been caught out by apparently simple jobs before. (I've been working on bikes for a long time)

Thanks for your offer, but I think it will be easier to fix the one I've got.

You could try some MAP gas on the case and see if it will be easier to tap out as you did before. I don't know if a socket on the inside of the case would provide enough support to stop it cracking the case.
