Drain plug??

    Hi, I have a 1982 1100 Maxim and have just done a 2000 mile trip over in Spain. The bike was a dream...just a drop of oil needed but now I'm home there is oil leaking from a "plug" just under the timing cover on the left hand side, never noticed it before! Any ideas? Cheers.

    Yes; on my 1981 550 Seca, there was a shaft oil seal under that timing cover, behind the timing assembly.
    Should be the same for you. Replace the seal to stop the leak.
    Len at XJ4Ever (the link at the top right of this web page) should have your seal and any other parts/gaskets you will need for this job.

    Hi SecaMaverick, thanks for the reply, I did not explain myself very well. The "drain" plug is directly underneath the cover not behind it. Its a bolt with an "o" Ring behind it!?

    Im not sure about the 1100 base.
    On most of the others there is a hex driven alloy cover with an o-ring squished against the engine under both sides of the crank covers.
    I have seen that crack and leak oil.
    It covers the oil channel under the crank and screws in horizontally.
    Am I close?

    I think perhaps you are very close, the plug I have is holding an o ring against the crankcase for sure! I will have to check if there is another on the other side.
    I would say this is slightly in front of the centre line of the crank?

    Be EXCIEEDINGLY careful when removing the oil gallery plug. They tend to break when removing them. A bit of heat helps to prevent that.
