I'm new here, recently bought a 80 XJ650 Maxim project bike and I've been searching for a new battery. The manual says to use a 12NI2A-4A, but I was wondering if there are any others I could possibly use in place of that one, being as none of my local shops have them. Thank you for any help.

So do I have to use that specific battery or are there substitutes I can use?

You can use any battery that meets the physical size, post placement, voltage, and cranking amps requirements.
Most sellers will have a cross-refrence by application.

If you can afford the extra initial cost of an AGM battery, get one. There is an overall cost savings because an AGM battery will provide longer service, and won't spill acid if the bike should tip over.

O'Reilly's says that a B14L-A2 will work so I'm assuming that one would be ok also?
And I found an AGM but wasn't sure if the CCA being 220 would be too much? I'm not too familiar with batteries

The higher the CCA the better it is the ability to start the bike in cold weather

AGM all the way! Less mess (no vent) and better performance. I have the MotoBatt in 2 of my bikes.

I have a MotoBatt MB12U in my other bike and it’s been great - but unfortunately it’s creeped up in price so I’m looking for other AGM options.

How’s the “mighty max” battery working out?

Does anyone else have an AGM recommendation?

I had a 18 month old mighty max go bad.
I have a pirate battery that hasn't given any trouble in 14 mo. so far.
now that I typed that out loud, I'll expect trouble shortly .

Another vote for the MotoBatt MB12U here. I'm still running the one I bought in 2016. It's been through some winters without a maintainer, a major collision, major temp swings, and the bike still starts up like a champ. I know its a little (a lot now) pricier than a regular lead acid battery but I've never gotten 8+ years out of one.

    Thanks for the replies.

I was really considering that Mighty Max, but now I think I may be better off spending a bit more (double ) for the Motobatt.

Both the mighty max and the pirate battery that fit my bike are 12aH.

    The Motobatt is 14aH.

I have had very good luck with AGM batteries from NAPA, not so much with MotoBatt. It was some (15?) years ago that I got a MotoBatt for my Kawasaki Concours. It lasted about a week and died with a big "SNAP" at an attempted start up. The warranty replacement was little better and died a slow, lingering death within 6 months.

    Interesting. Thank you.

If you have a chance - could you post the part number f the Napa battery you bought?

Im not sure if it’ll fit my yx600 (xj550), but it’ll be easy to check if I know which one you bought.

My motorcycle batteries have a pretty easy life as I always usually leave them on a trickle charger. My current ctek 7002 has a specific “AGM” mode to provide the higher voltage they need to stay healthy.

@chris123, I don't have a clue about that part number as that XJ was sold a couple of months ago. Sorry.
Most generally the counter guys in NAPA stores are pretty good at getting the right parts. Way better than the children who work at AA or AZ parts stores.

Just realized that the Motobatt MB12U is 15aH.

It’s +3aH more than any other batteries that fit my bike. I don’t know if that justifies the price but my bike turns over like a champ with this battery in it - especially after it’s been topped off with my trickle charger.

Guess I’ll be going with another of these :)
