I have done small repairs and servicing over the years but wanted a proper project bike to see if I am capable of creating something working and nice so bought a non running XJ750
    IMG_2479.jpeg

    Went through the basics
    no spark
    No front brakes
    Clutch seems ok
    Back brake

looking at the wiring it appeared that a ham fisted gorilla with a crimp gun and domestic wiring had attacked it over the years.

As I am planning to remove the atari and simplify everything I decided to do a quick wire to see if I could get it to start.

    IMG_2510.jpeg IMG_2506.jpeg

Well it started so hopefully the project is a goer have now removed the carbs for a clean…

My plan is to add this thread to hopefully show progress

Good start, always a positive thing to have a running bike before you start to go through it. Looking forward to your progress.

Wow you have some pitting action going on with them jets. Not to sure how that happened? I don't know if I have ever seen pitting on the jet heads like that? I would say check with Len by email. Not too sure how much shipping to the UK would be, but he is always a great help.

I think it is hit or miss with the ebay stuff. You really have to trust the description and read it very well. For you that might be the best bet so that you are not hit with all the other fees you have mentioned.

Yes you will be hit with import duties, handling charges and vat on top of it all. But do not buy a jet or rebuild kit from eBay - they are all Chinese rubbish, the dimensions are haphazard at best, you will be making your life very difficult, and most likely be back here asking us why your bike doesn't run right.
I've looked at your pics, I don't see much pitting on the jets. Just remove and clean with an ultrasonic cleaner then inspect carefully.

I agree, the picture looks like there is a lot of dirtiness, maybe not pitting. How would jets get pits anyway?

Well….. carbs went back in and it runs on two cylinders. Right had two (if that makes any difference). I have checked spark which is good.

any thoughts? Have I messed up the carbs or is it a compression issue. I have ordered a compression tester but would appreciate any suggestions.

What does it meant to "synch" them?

That should be sync or synchronize.

    If you say so @Huntchuks
To explain, before you fit the rebuilt carbs you need some initial settings, so each float must be set to spec, and tested with fuel to get the fuel level correct. Then each butterfly needs to be set to the same position (bench synch), and the idle speed screw set . Idle mixture screws all 3 turns out is where I start as well.
I set the bench synch by observing the edge of the butterfly relative to the edge of the first progression hole, others talk of cutting up credit cards, using paper clips etc - each to his own, but it's the edge of the 1st hole for me...
Maybe do a search on here with "bench synching, sync, synch" or whatever...Apologies if my Brit abbreviation caught you out.
