This is on my 81 xs850s, so mostly similar to most XJs in terms of overall circuit layout for the turn signals.

I can turn on my left signal every time no problem.
If left is on, and I switch it to right, the right signal also works.

If no signals are on for ~10 secs are more, and I turn on the right signal, I get nothing.. I have to trigger the left signal first, then switch it to the right.

Most of the time I'm using hand signals, tho it'd be nice to have this working again.

Anyone seen this behavior? Any ideas?

While waiting for replies, I will disassemble/clean/rebuild the switch (again), and I will attempt to disconnect the cancel unit also (its a pain getting at it, as my hands are not small, and I basically have to drain all the fuel and pull petcocks to get the tank off)

Ok, solved this one.. the little tang (aka momentary contact) for the Left signal, highlighted in Rooster 53's photo, was bent/curled back and no longer making contact when the switch was moved to the right.. I gently straightened it with a needle nose and its working again. Easy fix. Thanks!

I had issues on my X a couple of weeks ago. Hard to get the signals to go on, etc. I took the halves apart and found the inside packed with dirt, dried mud, from some insect (wasp?). I don't know how one got inside though. Everything was disassembled and cleaned and now works better than ever.
