I've got a 1982 xj650. Ran into a problem where my headlights and brake lights ceased working. Checked everything, it really drove me nuts for a few weeks. Finally i made my way back to the main circuit board (the one located under the LCD screen on my model.) turns out it's fried. SOOOO i'm looking for a new one. I've sent emails to people parting off their bikes but nobody has returned anything as of yet so i'm trying to be proactive. Thanks.

LCD screen? Not sure what you mean. I'm parting an 82 maxim and still have the most of the wiring.

yea, my bike has this little lcd screen that goes through a little pre-ride check when you start the bike. Headlights, stand, fuel and what not. I've had one hell of a time finding a bike similar to this. hope you can help cuz i'm running out of options

Tommy, could you possibly post pics of your instrument cluster and/or the circuit board?

well it turns out I have a 1982 XJ750J. It was sold to me as an 82 650. I got it for 250 bucks and it was running "well" until the circuit incident. Unfortunatly, I cannot get pics up yet, i stopped by my local shop (i hate elecric work) and they wanna charge me 70 bucks an hour to diagnose the problem and fix it. Any tips on where to get the part cheap? If I had the part i'd install it myself but as of yet i cannot find it cheap anywhere. Your held would be greatly appreciated as this is my only bike and it's killing me watching guys ride past my garage. Thanks again.

Check on e-bay under XJ750 there is one on there right now You should plan on picking up nthe whole cluster

Did you unplug the cluster, I think my bike runs with out it, The status display is just what its title is. It just shows you the status of the fluid levels (fuel, brake fluid, oil, batterywater) and status of the side stand, as well as your high beam light (blue) and the turn signal lights (yellow) Check your fuses and may be you could unhook the display and get the other stuff to work. I think someone here might know of a way to bypass that display so you can ride while looking for a differant one. Good Luck you may have to start a new thread for " bypass LCD display" and see what happens

I really cannot get over how helpful this site has been. Coming into this hobby as a total noob (i dont even change my own oil on my truck) I knew nothing about bikes or motors. I just finished a complete breakdown and cleaning of the carbs, understanding each pieces function. I feel so confident as i tackle each new challenge. This site is great!! Thanks for your help. I'll start new thread in the meantime and see if anything happens there too. Thanks again

Have you checked diodes inside your headlight bucket?
Mine was fried and HD didn't work.

Does the unit look something like this? I have this from an 86 Venture I had and they might be compatible. Experts may join in with their knowledge of these things and straighten us out.
