Hi guys, I have a problem. My '82 XJ550 Maxim has an exhaust leak and an accompanying horrendous rattle that I need to get repaired. (collector rusted through? Muffler baffles in bits?) I've looked into that prospect of buying a used or new-old stock and even aftermarket systems, but they all seem so darn expensive (poor college student.) Does anyone have a cheap alternative or suggestion that will aid my situation and bet my bike sounding smooth again? If anyone's got some tips, suggestions or a description of their setup, I'd appreciate it greatly.

eBay. You should be able to get "bits" if your head pipes are good you should be able to find a collector cheap. Mufflers too, even aftermarket, for the Maxim come along all the time you just have to check regularly. That is probably the least expensive way to do it.

I'm assuming an exhaust from a 650 or 750 maxim won't bolt up to a 550 motor without significant modification, correct?

nope. 550's are unique unto themselves, exhaust-system wise. Have you figured out exactly what part(s) you need yet?

I actually found some header pipes and a collector on Ebay for a steal, so I snatched them up quick. The top of the collector is pretty much toast, and seeing as I have very little welding skills, I figured it would be best to purchase a used one.
