    Hello everyone,

I have searched the forums for this issue, but didn't yeild any results. But if this topic has been discussed please excuse this post and redirect me to the appropriate thread.

I have a 1983 XJ 750 Maxim and recently I have encountered a problem (only happened twice, but still concerned): when I kill the engine, the starter keeps turning.

The battery is new, and the charging system has been checked out by my local bike shop.

I have read that it may be linked to the solenoid, starter relay.

    Any suggestions ideas?

Also, please let me know if you need any more info.

    Thanks,

    Good research.
The Solenoid has to be closed to get current to the Motor.
Unfortunately, testing the Solenoid in any conventional manner may not give you any indication that the Contacts have arced to a point where they're bridged allowing the Solenoid to act as if the Points are closed.

We have Members that have successfully opened the Solenoid and filed the Contact Points.
I'm sure the process is time consuming.

It might be easier for you to just replace the Solenoid with a Brand New one rather than spend your time opening the one you have to recondition it.

    Thanks Rick for the reply.

I'll check out my local salvage for a replacement this weekend.

I have read that engine/machine shops may carry them as well, but they are for different types of machines. Any advice?

you could possibly try a solenoid from an automobile and see if it solves your problem, if so you can get a replacement for the bike, if not, you're not out any money for the test

Metasoil, Redfire has a good thought. Any 12-14V coil should work. This puts the dime-a-dozen Ford solenoids into view. We've gotten reports from folks using garden tractor solenoids. The variety is endless really. And it is a time consuming process to disassemble your OEM unit (I've three under my belt).
