    Hi all
Looks like I may need to replace the 4 rubber intake manifolds for the carbies and my local mechanic says I'm looking @ about $100 each for them. does anyone know of an after market one that is cheaper yet still of decent quality?

    Cheers
    Sammy

    May need to replace?
    Are they leaking?
    What shape are they in?

You might be able to get another season or two out of them by doing some repair work on the ones you got.

    WARNING:
The Cap Screws holding those Manifolds on to the Head are made of some pretty cheap and terribly soft steel.
    Don't break even ONE off!

If you try to remove them and they don't budge ... put-off the work until the Off-Season!

    Hi Rick

I just bought the bike (and it's already turning into a nightmare :(... Thought it was an '81 750 which the frame is but it's an '80 650 motor I now realise.

The rubbers look pretty bad...someone's attempted to seal them with something before....I'm not sure what but they're covered in some sort of sealant.

The bike gets up to running temp and then idles @ about 3 - 4000 rpm, so it looks like it's sucking in extra air somewhere.

    Probe it for leaks.
Use a Propane Torch. Just turn the Gas on ... (don't light it!)
While its running ... probe all over and around the Intake Manifolds, Carbs and Boots.
    Listen to the Idle.
If the Idle increases ... you got an Air Leak.
If it don't ... you need some tuning.

Thanks... A website worth Bookmarking, but Doesn't look like they have the manifolds.

I'll look up the part numbers and see what I can find out there I guess.

    Thanks anyway

    Manifold Boots-R-Chacal!

ww7) OEM and reproduction INTAKE MANIFOLDS, both original and reproduction individual manifolds and complete sets are offered to allow you to replace cracked, dry-rotted, vacuum-leaking (making carb tuning
impossible......) originals. These are the vulcanized rubber-over-aluminum tubes that run from the front of the carbs to the cylinder heads!

NOTE: the reproduction manifolds are excellent quality, basically indistinguishable from the originals. However, the gaskets that come with them are a very thin paper style, much less substantial than the originals, although they probably will work okay. You might want to consider buying some of the original manifold-to-head gaskets when ordering a reproduction kit.......

HCP535LH OEM Yamaha rubber INTAKE MANIFOLD, used on the two left cylinders (#1 and #2). Manifold only; you must order all accessory pieces (manifold-to-head gaskets, nipple plug caps, bolts, etc.) separate. Fits all 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim, 650 Midnight Maxim, and 1982 XJ650 Seca (not turbo) models.

    Each: $ 41.00

HCP536RH OEM Yamaha rubber INTAKE MANIFOLD, used on the two right cylinders (#3 and #4). Manifold only; you must order all accessory pieces (manifold-to-head gaskets, nipple plug caps, bolts, etc.) separate. Fits all 1980-83 XJ650 Maxim, 650 Midnight Maxim, and 1982 XJ650 Seca (not turbo) models.

    Each: $ 37.00

HCP535SET4 OEM Yamaha rubber INTAKE MANIFOLD, complete set of 4 intake manifolds (2 left and 2 right). Manifolds only; you must order all accessory pieces (manifold-to-head gaskets, nipple plug caps, bolts, etc.) separate. Fits all 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim, 650 Midnight Maxim, and 1982
    XJ650 Seca (not turbo) models.

    Set of 4: $ 144.00

HCP77 Reproduction Yamaha rubber INTAKE MANIFOLDS, complete set of 4 intake manifolds (2 left and 2 right). OEM quality at a better price! Includes a set of 4 manifold-to-head gaskets. Fits all 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim, 650 Midnight Maxim, and 1982 XJ650 Seca (not turbo) models.

    Set of 4: $ 129.00

ww8) Yamaha intake manifold-to-head GASKET and O-RING. Seals the intake manifold to the cylinder head mating surface. A "must-replace" item whenever the intake manifolds are removed for any reason.

HCP544 OEM intake manifold-to-head GASKET, used on all XJ650 (except turbo), all XJ700 non-X, and all XJ750 models.

    Each: $ 6.00

HCP544SET4 OEM intake manifold-to-head GASKETS, used on all XJ650 (except turbo), all XJ700 non-X, and all XJ750 models.

    Set of 4: $ 21.00

    -----------------

That should be enough to get you started... PM Chacal for current pricing and shipping information.

Even at that exchange rate, and with shipping, Chacal can still do a lot of good for you, Sam.

The funny thing about living up here is that if anything, the off season is in summer 'cause it rains so much, but if you're prepared for rain properly, it's actually not so bad.....except that I have about 17 creek crossings which turn into torrents during the heavy rain (but I'd take that over cold 8O any day).....

Give me a home among the gum trees
With lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a kangaroo.
A clothesline out the back, verandah out the front
    And an oooooooold rocking chair.

 & a nice bike too!!!!
