I have (hopefully) attached a picture of the way I think the parts go back in the master cylinder. Am I correct?

If so how do I get the piston in the bore? I put the rubber seal on the piston with the wide part of the seal going in the bore first. Is that correct?

    The patient is a '81 XJ650 Maxim.

    Thanks.
    Jim

Try again to attach a pic.

No joy inserting a pic. Sorry to waste your time.

I just did mine so I know so do as per below:

    1.Insert spring
    2.Insert piston
3.Snap ring in the MC slot and ensure it fits in the groove
    4.Put on the rubber boot
    5.Install lever
    6.Bleed the system
7.Go for a run to ensure everyting is OK
8.Congratulate yourself for job well done and have a beer.

How do you get the Seal back in the Bore?

    Wash your hands.
Don't try to assemble the Master Cylinder "Dry"
Lube the Bore with fresh Brake Fluid
(Pour a cap-full in, cover end with your palm, shake.
Lube the New Seals -- Fresh Brake Fluid
    Double-check positioning of Seals.
    Lube your fingers
Fit the Seals in the Bore and gently persuade the edge into the Bore all-around.
Apply steady and firm pressure to the Seal.
Let your thumb hold everything in place while you start the Circlip.
Once the Circlip is in place ... make sure it's firmly set in the locking groove.

Spray-off all the Brake Fluid on the Outside from handling the Master with Brake Fluid on your hands.

    THANKS!

I got it all together and went for a spin up and down the alley.

My neighbor gave it to me last fall. The bike hasn't moved under its own power in 7 years. Over the winter I rebuilt the carbs, front forks and front brake (couldn't remember how to put it back together).

Now, get some insurance, plates and venture beyond the alley!

    Thanks for all your help!
    Jim

The brake isn't working so well. Would you look at the pic again and tell me if I have the spring facing the correct way?

I put the spring in the bore as pictured: with the widest part of the spring going in the bore first. Is this correct?

The pads drag and the brake lever has no "feel." Pads contact the rotor with the very slightest touch of the lever. (I am sure the small hole in the MC is free of debris and not causing the drag.)

    Thanks for your input.
    Jim

double check that all air is out of the system, let the bike sit for about half an hour after bleeding to allow all air bubbles to settle out, then rebleed to ensure all air is out.
if that doesnt work, check the front calipers to make sure they are free from any burrs or rust on the pistons that may cause drag upon releasing.

Does the circlip go in before or after the boot?

Thanks. Doese the cutout in the top of the boot go over the plunger and seal around the groove in the plunger or does it just sit over it?
