Ive had my XJ550 for 4 years now but I never really paid attention to milage; nowadays though everyone is talking about it and and I get comments all the time about how much money I must be saving zooming around on my bike, so I started keeping track. Usually I average about 55 MPG, seems a bit lower than what I expected. Is that about normal or maybe an indication of a mix or valve problem, something like that? Mostly just curious what other similarly sized bikes get.

I would say 55 MPG is pretty good depending on your riding habits. The best i have gotten with my 750 Seca is 53, but I average about 50 MPG. My 920 Virago does about 46 MPG.

I'm pretty sure I could stay above 60 if I stayed off the gas and shifted earlier... but what fun is that anyways?

Funny that a 920 does nearly as good, I used to ride with a guy who USED to have a '81 920, well he still has most of it. Someone needs to explain to him more clearly what the phrase "No Outlet" means.

My last check was 48 mpg on my seca 900. A lot of 65 mph freeway riding.

I get just above 40 mpg. And that is if I stay off the Hi-way.
