ok bought a 82 maxim 750 with 24k miles started by doing all the basics

    new fluids
    cleaned tank
    new plugs
    fuse box
    cleaned carbs 4 times now

Everything on this bike is stock it has the airbox intact no pods stock 4-2 exaust

I have cleaned the carbs due to the fact that i cannot get any color on the plugs unless there about 5-7 turns out which is too far. I have used compressed air along with carb cleaner i have taken everything off the carbs and made sure there were clean passages for both air and fuel. the Jets are stock sized #120 #40 and the air jets im assuming they are under the diaphram are 225 and 80. i have used propane to check for air leaks......none and all the mixture needles look to be in next to perfecto condition. im using ngk bp7es plugs running regular gas which i know to have 10% ethanol.

Suggestions? You guys are a wealth of knowledge far beyond any dealership or manual just getting fustrated thats all. Thanks in advance

how about larger jet size to compensate for the large amount of turns on the mix screws?

yeah im not opposed to that im just curious why it wouldnt work from stock and i feel if i just move up in jet sizes i may be overlooking the real issue. how big a jump in size is reasonable?

How is the petcock, any leaks? Was the tank in bad shape that it might be gumed up? How about the fuel line? have you replaced that?

maybe throttle shaft seals are weak?... My Seca was doing the same thing till I replaced them.. had to turn the screws way out to get any richness.

Start the bike, spray a bit of carb cleaner directly on the throttle shaft ends and see if the idle changes...

also, it's possible that your idle adjustment screw is too far in, which would provide too much air at idle.

    Eric:

    How far up in Maine?
Did you remove the AIR Jets?
They are sometimes confused and cause trouble if they get switched around.

    They belong like this:

im up here in auburn which is about an hour and a half from the maine border on 95

Yes i had removed the air jets just to visually inspect. and there in the correct order..... I just re did the carbs today using a pen light to see light on the other end of the passages along with compressed air carb cleaner and a few peices of wire from a wire brush

im thinking of parking the bike and using the float bowls as shot glasses it'll be put to good use then

would low float levels give me this issue

i couldnt foul a plug if i wanted to i have even removed the mixture screws completely and tached it to 6.5 for a minute

Initally when i cleaned the carbs they were in imacculate condition i just had the issue of revs not dropping at lights the plugs that were in it when i bought it were bp8es and they were BLACK.
