Does anyone out there have any close up pics of their engine guards? I would like to try to build a set for my '82 Maxim 550. If not does enyone know where I might get a set? New / Used it doesn't matter.

    Thanks,
    Bob

If your bike looks like mine I'd be happy to post close up pics. Here is one shot of my bike. Do you want close pics of the guards?

I'd check Ebay and local bike salvage yards. I'm sure there are some around NY.

My bike has the same size as SnoSherrif, but mine does not have the extra reinforcement bar his has. I will take a picture this evening and post it here.

Yeah, you don't want the ones for the X and you DO want the three point guards. The two point guards can fold in a crash, damaging the cases they are supposed to protect.

I crash tested my three point guards at a track day a few months ago and they held up well.

Here is a picture of my 2-point engine guards.

    Hope this helps.

SnoSherrif, I'd be interested in a close-up of your 3-point engine guards. I'm wondering where the 3rd point bolts up to.

A note of caution for anyone with the two-point guards -- if you have a drop at speed, they may do as much damage as they prevent! 8O DAMHIKT
Get the 3-point ones as soon as you can -- you won't be sorry.

I assume that you could also mount some highway pegs to these guards?? Anyone have that out there?? Thanks.

You are correct. I tried them on my bike but with my straight handle bars the ride wasn't comfy for me.

I ran them when I was living in San Diego and running all over heaven's creation but I dumped them when I settled into around town driving. I'll chime in on the three point mounts, much stronger, won't fold over like the two points.

The three points would obviously be stronger.

I have the two points and I have highway pegs on them. I have them tightened as much as I can go. If I put enough pressure on them, they will rotate AND/OR push the crash gaurd around...

I had the 2 pointers on My 82 XJ 750 Max and I could bend them with my feet on the highway pegs if I put to much pressure on them. They were nice to have on long trips but would have been a lot better with the sturdier mounting of the 3 point set up. I'll be looking into a set for the little 550.

I have the two point guards on my bike now. Is that really true that having them is worse than not having them? I don't really care about the looks, I just want to have the best setup. Thanks.

Any protection is better than none, but I think what you heard is based on the good old days of huge bars that stuck way out and provided no protection value at all. They had a habit of folding over and traping a leg between a hot engine and themselves I was told. Never seen this happen, but I have heard it from multiple sources. I will make the supposition that there is a point of diminishing returns for crash bars, they have limited strength after they get out past a point. The neat, tightly tucked in three point units are the strongest you can get but the two points will provide a slightly lower level of protection. This could make a difference if you lay it down at speed, but for dropping it after you washed it in the driveway, no big deal and no broken side covers (busted mirror is usual). This thread has had quite a bit of discussion concerning these crash cages, I would encourage you to review it and see if you don't agree. Oh, and get the three point cages at your first opportunity, you'll sleep better at night.

I just got some 3 point guards off Ebay--black ones to match my bike. Which by the way I will be posting pics. of soon. The guards look good and seem like they are pretty strong. They don't stick out far enough for putting my feet on though. Going to have to add some pegs, but not sure how that will look.

I ran pegs on my three pointers and they protected the cage nicely;-). They will give you a nice spot to place the pegs, you just have to make sure you tighten the living dog snot out of them so they don't slip. Good luck!
