I found some reasonably priced brake pads marked for (among other things) an xj550 or xj750. Anyone tell me whether they might fit an xj650, too? I'm figuring probably not, but at the price, it's worth checking.

No joy Storm, I can't make a determination without a picture or a part number. I can say that my 650 pads do not match any of my 750 pads (I've two different 650s) so I'm going to suggest that they do not swap but I'm not a 550 wiz. Post some photos of the pads and of your brake calipers, some one here will recognize them.

I usually start here: EBC Brakes.

Download their catalog and see what their part number is for your bike. Third party brake pad/shoe manufacturers USUALLY include the EBC part number as part of theirs as well. Worth a shot!
