I always use 2 amps for bike and lawn batteries. IMHO higher amps can boil the battery.

I personally prefer the 750ma charge of a battery tender myself. very safe that way. 2 amps shouldn't harm anything though.

You can leave the battery in position but keep in mind that you should open the cell caps to allow the cells to vent while charging. This tends to leave acid all over things so I would pull the battery personally.
You should charge your battery overnight (8 hours or so) depending upon the state of charge. Less for a partial discharge, more for a full discharge.
Make sure to keep the cells topped off with distilled water. Low cells won't hold a charge for diddly.
If the battery is two years old and you ran it down completely, its probably done if it is a cheapie.
Yuasa batteries tend to last longer as do Diehards. Spring the extra cash for a better battery if replacement is indicated.

my battery has a vent tube that i've found to be adequate for venting of the cells. you do however want to keep an eye on the cell levels as robert suggested. make sure you use and automatic charger so you don't have to worry about over-charging. On my battery charging from a full discharge at 750ma, it took about 3 days to charge.
