I've got an 82 XJ750J maxim and as some of you may know, it has the modular style handlebars. I'd like to replace them with a 7/8" bar type like the 650 has. Does anyone know if this can be done? Can I just swap the tripple tree and bars with ones from a 650?

Yes. You will need the "risers" and bars from a bike with the standard bars.

Will i need the upper and lower triple trees too? or will they bolt up to mine?

What exactly do i need to get to make this happen?

As far as I know, no. The risers for the standard bars should bolt right onto the top triple tree in place of the '82 adjustable bars.
I just checked out your build. Nice engine! I can't wait to see the bike finished. One thing to look out for, if those are 750 or 650 instruments you will have to change out the oil sending switch. It works in reverse for the computer that was on the '82. The computer received a steady voltage to show full oil and the analog received no voltage to show full oil. I put an '82 engine in my '83 and had the oil light on all the time.
