i was just wondering, and i know thsi is most likely a dumb question, but the red light that says "oil" indicates that is it overheating, not that it's low, well that could cause over heating, but iwas jsut wondering cuz mines an aircooled and im always worried if it is overheating or not, thanks

You don't have to worry about overheating with the aircooled unless you are sitting still for looonnngg periods of time, or if you are running lean the motor will run on the hot side. The oil light at least on my X is only a low oil light from my understnading but I don't know it all...

the guys are right, that light is strictly an oil level indicator.

If it comes on while the engine is on, and your bike has enough oil, either the sensor is bad (or dirty), or there's a wiring issue, like a corroded or loose terminal.

does the light stay on all the time, or is it intermittent?

The oil level light goes to a little float switch in the oil pan. The switch could be bad or you might not have enough oil in the engine. Check the window in the right hand side cover. fill it up to the top line on the sight glass. Thats where I have to keep mine or the light will come on if I jump on the throttle hard. Hope that helps.

If you fill the Crankcase up to the top line ... leaving a bubble in the Oil Level Window ... you can have the Oil Level Light come-on intermittently.

When the Oil is cool ... or when running in outside temperatures that will keep the Engine Block cool ... the circulating oil will not be "Scavenged" back to the Sump rapidly enough to keep the Oil Level Sensor from indicating the Low Oil Level ... while the Oil is making its way back to the Sump.

An easy fix is to fill the Crankcase up to the top of the Oil Level Window until the "Bubble" disappears. The little bit of extra oil will satisfy the Sensor and keep the Warning Light from coming on!

Schooter, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. I know that you are hesitant to spend money on the odd thing or two for your bike but for the price, you CAN'T go wrong buying a manual for your machine. It has all sorts of information on how your bike works and how to fix things that are broken. Sport the money (Chacal has them cheap) and joint the ranks of the informed owner. It will help minimize the "I know this is a stupid question..." statements. And there are no stupid questions.

I'd bet that owners who have the Manual and read it tend to do the maintenance needed to keep their bikes running and "Mechanically tiddyed-up" more than someone without.

Reading the Manual tends to make you curious about systems and their maintenance.
Before you know it ... you're saying: "I can do that tonight while listening to the ballgame" ... (or something).

In the long run, you wind-up ahead, because your knowledge base includes things that wouldn't come to mind if you didn't browse the Manual and learn how easy it is to take care of a few things.

I'm pretty sure my oil light is for pressure, not level. If i turn my idle down to where it almost dies, the light flickers cause the pressure isn't high enough.
