My bike stopped firing on cylinders 1 and 4. It looks as though they are from the same coil. How should I go about checking for a bad coil or a bad ignitor? or is there somewhere else I should look. Any help would be appreciated.

set your multimeter to ohms & read the low tension wires, should be 2.5 ohms. set meter to kilo ohms & read high tension leads (without 'r' caps) should read 11 ohms.

Excuse my ignorance which ones are the high tension and low tension.
Thanks for your quick reply Wizard

the low tension wires are the thin ones, the high tension go to the plugs, I did say without 'r' caps on. Wiz.

Swap the spark plug lines and the coil inputs. If the problem follows the coil wires, it's your pickup. If it stays the same, it's the coil.

If switching all the leads has the same coil not firing it is definitely the coil. However the problem moving to the other coil could also be the TCI. I had one with just that this week.

If you can get the suspect coil to fire by switching the leads ohm out the pickups. If they test ok (also test for short to ground) then the problem is probably the TCI.

How do we ohm out the pick-up coils? Is a bad reading just zero?

Just switched the leads and still the same coil not firing. I finally get to upgrade my coils. When something breaks its always bitter sweet. Yea something broke but now I get to put on what I want. Thanks for all your help guys.

The pickup coils are read out at the four pin connector on the TCI. You should read between the orange and blue as well as the grey and blue. Resistance should be 700 ohms =/- 20% (a large margin). No resistance (0 ohms) indicates a short.
