Im in Black Mountain your about 2 hours from me. If you were closer I would come over and take a look but I dont even know if I would be of any help. How are things coming along maybe we get you going? Have you checked your battery and made sure its good and the right one? Follow your ground cable off your battery make sure they have good connections.

    Hey Fellas,

I have been reading this forum from the beginning, and it looks pretty good. I have been planning a rewire for my XJ when I chop it this winter. I have done a couple wiring harnesses in the past for buddies and the diagram you are working from looks pretty close to my "applebees napkin diagram" that i keep in my desk.

Can you describe "how" it just quits? I am just curious if you are SURE it is an electrical problem? Does it do this repeatedly? As in, you start it, it runs, then it dies, wait 2 minutes, it starts, runs then dies, etc. Could you just describe it a little more?

    Cheers,

I would start by verifying that you have the ignition wired correctly first. ALSO, obviously you should check all fuses. Check that you have a good fully charged battery. And that you are getting power to all the appropriate items With the ignition on. After that, hook up a VOM to the wires going TO the ignition coil (NOT OUT) and put the meeter on AC. If it moves (the reading will be gibberish btw) but if it moves while you crank, you would know that you are getting "signal to fire" basically into the coils but not out. Then you might have a bad coil. If they were the originals, or improper hooked up previously, or perhaps other issues there.

i have spark to the outside coil but no spark on the other its not the coil b/c i switched the wires to see if the coil would spark. The wire is a gray wire that goes down to my cdi if anyone knows how to test one of those please let me know or if anyone has one cheap i would buy it from them it has to be the problem

Im not sure what the BEST way to test that would be. However, use the VOM method I mentioned earlier on the pick-up coil. Perhaps, you only have a wire crossed/not terminated/bad half of the pick-up coil. If you look at the diagram, there are two pick-ups on there (my guess is why you only have "half" firing). Maybe one of those is bad...

I would start there before I doubted 80's era solid state electronics... that stuff was build to last...

Sorry, I digress, check the pick-up coil before toying with the ignition.

Buy a volt meter? Or pick up coil? I don't think I understand the question...

The more I think about it.. i am wondering if you just have a short or open somewhere on your way to/from one side of the pick up coil...

If you don't have a volt meter... you could use a small circuit tester, or a cheapy from like, harbor freight or something...

    EVEN SIMPLER

Look at the diagram, and switch the Gy and O wires coming from the pick up coil to the ignition. If the other "half" fires, and the one that was working stops... then you know it's that side of the pick up coil.

Thanks, Don. This is exactly what I am after. It looks as if the headlight is on prior to starting the motor. Is this correct?

Yep, that's correct as per the OP request.

Sorry to revive a long dead thread, but I stumbled across this while working on my bike.

I bought a very dead Yamaha Seca. I *think* it is an 82, but can't be sure.

The wiring is trashed, I need to rewire the whole thing. Right now I am just trying to get it running, I don't care about the lights or instruments.

What I have set up seems to be exactly like the minimalist diagram posted here, with the exception of the pickup coil connection to the TCI unit. I only have 3 wires (this could be the way it is supposed to be, or it could be missing a wire, its difficult to tell).

I can get the starter motor running. The problem is that I have no sparks. Any ideas?

The pickup coils share a black wire at the TCI if memory serves. You should have 12V+ on the red wire w/white stripe when the key is on. This wire should be hooked to the TCI and both coils. Also, there should be another (?) black wire coming from the TCI that should go to ground. I think originally it goes to the starter safety relay first. For testing purposes you can just ground it to the battery to complete the circuit.

    Hope that helps.

When I rewired my Seca, I made the ignition system separate from the main harness, to make it easier to convert to EFI later.

Here is a pic with the basics that are needed written in. Hopefully it helps.
