    You rang....?
Orangevale/Folsom area for 16 years. I remember hearing the sonic booms of the Habu scooting on by into Beale. Of course we saw lots of Huffs and 37s from Mather. Man I wish I was home again...sigh. I miss the lake and the river. So Cal just isn't where its at for me.
Spent over 7 years in the bay area (Alameda and Moffett) and loved it. Never a dull moment and loads of nature preserves.
Planning a trip back home for Thanksgiving.

my branch chief (MSgt USAF) did and does live in Orangevale. a buddy of mine (USAF) was from and moved back to Santa Rosa. another friend of mine works in the State Senate and records/mixes the weekly radio message from the Goven-ator...

what i liked most about the Sacramento Valley was the sierras to the north east along with Reno, the bay area to the south west and Sacramento due south. the dry weather in the summer was pretty nice too...

what i disliked was the 3 seasons. wet and cold in the winter, way hot in the summer and nice in between in the spring and fall. if its going to be cold there better be snow and not rain or slush...

my wife and i have been "Bac to Sac" 3 times since we got married in '96. i left the area in 91...

Gad, you remember that commercial??? Dang that thing is old!
Dudes, we ought to have a HWY 49 run in October. The smell of the pines and Apple Hill mixing with crisp, cold autum air is just one of those life experiences you have to try before you kick the bucket. Sigh..... I miss home.

how about Cal Worthington and his dog Spot? which depending on which version of the commercial it was, might ACTUALLY BE a dog?

more often than not it was a chimpanzee or a giraffe or any number of animal...

    dont forget I "C" U channel TV 36!

then there was Elaine someone or 'nother on Fox 40 (i think. im starting to get old and not remember all of the little details)

there was Wonder Rabbit on KROY 97 (hes the guy at the senate who does Arnolds broadcasts) and KSEG Sacramento's Eagle (96.9) which KROY went to on Veterans Day 1990. i know because i worked there part time doing engineering go-fer stuff...

Smoke, you up to try the A&W again??? We keep missing each other, maybe this year will be the year. Do you know if that old A&W up in Auburn is still around? Or how about the one in Folsom or off of Old Auburn Road down by Elkhorn/HWY 80?

KROY in the late 80s and 1990 was Hot Hits also known as adult comtemporary (dance)...

the Cheshire Cat was a station closer to 106fm but i dont remember the cal sign...

i always like KRXQ. they were the smaller of the Big 2. everyone would take their decals and change the 96 or whatever it was to 69...

dang! now i want to come back out. i love Old Town and the railroad museum. even my WIFE liked the museum there...

is the Turn Verein Hall still there? it was on a letter street "I" or "J" i dont remember which but it was the north side of the street. is "J" street that goes TOWARDS the I-5 and I-80 on ramps? then its "J" street...

yep i need to come visit...

The California State Railroad museum is a journey unto itself. I love the place! I had the pleasure of touring it when it first opened and have seen it grow into an outstanding facility.
33rd and J my friend! Man did I spend many Octobers there! I don't know if it is still standing. Website says they are still in business. Best Octoberfest in town (Sacrament that is, there was always East Nicolaus or Grass Valley).
Geez Lt. You are really striking a cord here.

KZAP had the Chesire Cat on its logo. I wanna say it was a classic rock station at the time.

east nicolaus. i met a very very sweet girl there on thanksgivings day 1990. she was the niece of my friends wife. that relationship ran pretty good for about a month but i think the 5yrs difference might have had something to do with it. her family was too big for anyones house so they used the parish hall...

yes it was classic rock. i tried really hard to remember their call sign...

in 1991 my friend and i set up a 'hangar dance' at the Turn Verein Hall to raise money for the Red Cross. everyone was to dress up in WWII uniforms or 40s dress. my Air Corp historical reenactment group put alot of work into this and the dance was replete with a big band and "news from the war". there was quite a contingent of German-Americans in another room at the same time and were all talking about our bombing missions to Bremerhavn and Schweinfurt and the flak and the fighters...

Re: The Turn Verein- We (my dance troupe) used to corner the dance floor upstairs for ourselves once we got done with the exibition downstairs. Nothing like a drunk coed hanging on you when you are a 16 year old boy. Especially if she likes your lederhosen...!
East Nicolaus: That parish hall was/is (this was almost 25 years ago) the biggest structure in the whole of the town. I had never danced at a friendlier place. Loved it. Of course East Nicolaus was about 5 buildings back then...
If you can, check out Scheidel's Old European Restaurant in Grass Valley. They import the entertainment in October from the other side of the pond.
Remember the KZAP Midnight Movies at the Sunrise Mall?

YES! i remember the movies at sunrise...

the only thing significant about Grass Valley, well two...

    A) General Hubert Zemke from the 56th Fighter Group use to visit a certain other retired general that lived in Grass Valley, and he used to come down to our museum at Beale AFB (15miles east of Marysville and just south of Smartsville).

    B) that other General that lived in Grass Valley who is rather famous is a complete and total jackass. i was in the hospital waiting on a prescription and he came in. he waited about 5 minutes and went to the window and proceeded to dress this young 1st Lt up and down about "why is my prescription not ready? and "do you know who i am? and on and on. active duty personnel had priority over retirees and she did a very good job of keeping her cool. i apologized to her when i got my 'script and she said it wasnt anything she hadnt seen before. from him...

that general used to do AC/Delco ads and had something to do with flying really really fast...

You have got to be kidding me!!! I read his (CY right?) biography a few years back and he came out smelling like a rose! Go figure... I've gotten a little grumpy since retiring too but I'll never forget who has priority when it comes to taking care of our active comrads! We had a similar problem with Tom Cruise, treated all the enlisted folks like cr*p and acted like a complete jerk while aboard. Guess fame does not equate to humility. Pitty.

Lt, if you ever make it out this way, give me a heads up. I'd be willing to ride up to Sac just to meet up with you. ESPECIALLY in October!

    nope. 100% accurate and true...

heres another. he was making an official visit to the base for some event and as a photographer i got the assignment to shoot him...

the public affairs office called me and told me that i was limited to 2 photos of the general. ONE when he met with the Wing Commander and ONE when he was leaving. i replied they were kidding right? i was told hold on and a MSgt got on the phone and repeated the orders...

i was telling some other guys in the photolab and one of them said, "I could have told you that. Thats the standing order for him. I had the same orders when he visited ___air base in the Netherlands." (i dont remember where he was in Holland)...

most everyone WILL suck up to him because he "...flew that very important mission with broken ribs, knowing IT HAD to be flown!" bs. hes a hot shot and a meglomaniac and i dont ever want to see him again...

NOW, onto the hills and twistys!
