Hello everyone. I just bought a 81 maxim 550 and I had a question about it. I want to get a K&N air filter for it, will I need to re-jet my carbs? If so will a Dynojet Jet Kit work. Thanks

If its just the replacement filter for the airbox, probably not. This is for the K&N that goes inside of the airbox not the individual pods. If you do have to go up in size it would only probably be one main jet. I believe that the K&N stock replacement filter does breath better but if you are still running the stock exhaust then I wouldnt worry about it. When in doubt do a plug check and if its white go up in size or two.. One more thing, the replacement jets that are in a dynojet kit are not the same size as a mikuni carb jet. A dynojet 112.5 will not have the same internal diameter as a Mikuni carb jet. Yup it gets confusing on jetting.

Would it be better to go with individual pods?

Pods will require rejeting and some serious tuning. If you are simply needing a new filter and the bike is running without issue, I would simply change the filter in the stock airbox. K&N filters are VERY good and it will be the last one you ever buy.

The closer to stock you keep it the less tuning headaches you will incur. I use the stock Yamaha filter in the stock airbox and it works fine too. It is a "perpetual" filter in that no replacement interval is specified, they expect you to clean it out periodically is all. A "stock configuration" K & N will work just fine, simply double-check your plugs to be sure you're not too lean. As Sean said, if you have the stock exhaust you should be fine.
