Just as it says i painted the tank on my 82 maxim 750. Ran perfect before this.. well i took it off the bike pulled the cap off of it and the petcock as well sanded, painted (with tape over the hole where the cap was) it dried.. i gave it a good blow out with the airhose to make sure there wansn't anything (dust) inside the tank.. put it back together and now it still starts and will run but it just runs like shit like it seems like it is starving for fuel because it doesn't bog like it has too much its like just won't go/pull as much as it did before. Like majorly. And it won't stay running unless choke is on as before it didn't need choke even to start most of the time..

I'm thinking of pulling the tank again draining and making sure the petcock filter isn't clogged that is the ONLY thing i can think is wrong.. Any opinions would be nice.

Clogged petcock or something in fuel lines/passages would be a good place to start. How long did it sit while you painted the tank? Wonder if something dislodged and is clogging a jet...

Double check your vacuum line is seated properly. Well I guess first you can turn the petcock to prime and see if it runns properly if yes check the lines, if no you have something clogged.

You can flow test the fuel line at the carb tee. Set to prime. Also, see how much resistance there is by blowing back into the tank. You have to also have somebody apply suction to the smaller tube at the same time.

We'd like to see pictures of that ! :p

I really want to help you but my mind thinks differently.....What color did you paint it? I think I'll stay away from that when painting time comes.

I'm sure there's someone here that could give a disertation on using the wrong color on a bike. You do know there is fast paint and slow paint don't you?

I'd strip it and consider a different color that would increase fuel flow.

I know not much help but would be intrigueing if it wasn't poo.

Is it possible that with the fresh paint around the cap hole the cap seals a lot better and isn't venting?

I was thinking that maybe some over spray got in the tank, and the gas loosened it, but you stated that you taped off the fill hole. I am going to go along with the others on this and say its just a clogged petcock filter. On a side note, never use green paint. Green vehicles whether they be cars or bikes have more problems...don't know why but they do.

I vote vacuum line to petcock or starter cable in a bind opening up the fuel enrichment circuit.
    Good luck!

Any time an XJ-Bike WILL run with the Enrichment Circuit OPENED and has difficulty with the Enrichment Circuit CLOSED ... you have a Fuel Delivery situation you have to troubleshoot to find-out why the Carbs aren't supplying Fuel through the Pilot Fuel Jets and Passages.

    That ... or, ...

You have developed an Air Leak(s) that have the Bike trying to run too Lean and NEED the extra Fuel from the Enrichment Valves.

The Carbs didn't get dropped or bumped real bad somehow ... did they?

Sorry i've been gone all day, well thats after working on the maxim half the day. I thought it was the petcock clogged.. took it apart and no clean as a whistle.. next tried the fuel filter also clean. Everything was flowing good. Next i thought it was sucking air after the carbs as i found some cracks, negative. So i was thinking it had to be something in the carbs clogged because i didn't change anything. Got out some carb cleaner starting spraying them and when i sprayed the 1 and 4 the two outside ones i could hear the engine change, but not with 2 and 3.. Thought for a min. Pulled the plugs. Sure as shit the two outside's were sparking two inside's were not.. messed around and found the problem wire must've came apart when i pulled the tank off and no power was getting to the coil for plugs 2 and 3. Fixed that put her back together and whalla back to normal!

I was like WTF. Oh well that just goes to show to keep an open mind when troubleshooting. BTW i painted it black.. you can see it in the picture it was just cheap spray paint. But the thing runs like a champ again. Thanks for the imput though.
