Are any special tools needed for swapping valve shims? And what is the level of difficulty for this? My bike has about 25,000 miles on it, and I don't think it's ever been done. Thanks.

My Seca 400 is admittedly different than the XJs, but the valve adjustment process is similar.

The zip-tie trick wouldn't work for me, so I bought one of the MotionPro tools. It was very hard to get the nipple on the tool in the correct location to hold the bucket down, and it had to be held in place with a small screwdriver prying against the head or it would rotate out of the way and let the bucket pop up. Not a good situation when you've already got the shim out!

I would just suggest that, whatever method you use to hold the valve open/bucket down, make sure it is going to hold securely before you remove the shim.

Also, if you use the MP tool, take your time and MAKE SURE you don't rotate the engine the wrong way and crank the cam up against the tool. Be patient, don't get frustrated, and you'll be OK.
