I was checking out Chacal's parts list for oil pump cover screws and was suprised at the price for the XJ700N type screws. The part number according to the Yamaha parts catalogue is different for the 700 however, does anyone know if any of the 550's 650's and 750's cover screws are close to being the same? I'm not ready to pay $45.00 for 8 screws......yet.

Try Ace Hardware or CarQuest Auto parts. I've got quite a few metric replacement screws for the XJ650 and V45 Magna from these guys for very cheap. Especially the allen-head screws.

Price is stainless vs zinc coated etc. Will make a difference down the road. I buy a lot fro Ace but the local ones don't have much in metric stainless so I have to go with what they have.

If your screws are Yamaha pn 1FG-15481-00-00, they're still available from Yamaha for $5.40 ea. I looked at the fiche and they are totally different from the 550's, that's all I can answer for...

Yeah I know that they are different in shape by the phillips panhead. I think that the difference is that there is a metal stop collar and rubber bushing on the screw. Not sure why they are there. They aren't there to protect the rubber gasket, mine were squished and deformed in several places, had to buy replacements. However if the thread size and pitch are the same as the cheaper ones, I'm sure that I can put the right amount of torque on them and make them work.....I hope. I'm just looking for a cheaper solution to replace the screws

It's similar to the screws on all our valve covers. The rubber bit is an oil seal, the collar is to prevent overtigntening and wrecking the oil seal. If you can't find exact replacements, I'd spring for the real deal...

After taking off both covers, I really don't see any oil seal properties. The RHS just opens up to another sealed area that is bone dry, and the LHS opens up to where you adjust your timing. But I already ordered 8 new screws from http://www.boats.net/ for $1.06 each, a much more reasonable price. However, I won't be getting them for about ten days plus, bummer. But hey I got time, and I can wait for a $35 break on the price of 8 flippin screws.

the rubber is there to keep water out, not oil in. plus boats.net is an excellent source for many yamaha motorcycle parts. the only thing i havent been able to get from them is my main wiring harness i need, and there prices are about 15-20% lower than the dealers. im lucky though, i go into the dealership w/ my printout from boats.net with the prices, and they match it so i dont have to pay shipping(its great to know people in the right places).

Tthe difference in the screws is due to the fact that the mounting holes in the XJ700 covers are, for some reason, quite a bit larger in diameter than on any of the other style oil pump covers, and to make up for this larger diameter, some type of "bushing" had to be made to take up the extra clearance.........since they retained the same size threaded hole in the engine case (notice how much larger the rubber bushing is than the threaded shaft). Water-sealing may be an additional reason.

I've no idea why they used bigger holes in the 700 models side covers, but they did, and if you use an un-bushed screw the cover can be significantly "mis-aligned" (although the standard screws from other models will actually thread into the engine case holes). But the "all-other side covers" screws are about 2mm shorter in overall length than the ones for the 700's, and the ones from the 700's also have a much larger head than the standard version screws.

Nice!, however, I just got them for $.07 more each, bummer, but hey I'm still saving a considerable amount. I'll keep that site in mind next time I gotta shop around for some parts its already locked into my favorites. With shipping, all 8 are costing me about $10.25 or so. Saved $35 off the price from most other venders. That kinda money can go along ways to getting me those steel woven break lines I'm wanting from Chacal.
