    Yo,

How long do you guys leave the prime on for? This morning, I left the prime and choke on during warm up (idling) and turned both off once i started riding. After 5minutes the bike stalls from a stop.

I did another way, leave prime and choke on for like a mile then turn them off, better luck this way.

But how do you guys do it?
Morning starts need longer prime right?

    Pat

I only use prime the first time in the spring and when I am restarting after emptying the bowls/running out of fuel.

You shouldn't need it on the regular mornings.

Sounds more like you are turning the choke off too early.

Morning procedure - FINEC - start bike - put on helmet - ride away - turn off choke slowly in first few miles.

When I am at a stop and it won't idle I just give it enough throttle to keep it above 1000rpm.

The only time I used mine was right after I cleaned my carbs, no need to use it unless there is no fuel in the bowls.

o i see. few miles eh? I only have to travel few miles....I guess I will leave the choke on. The thing is it idles fine before it dies. It is when i give it gas andlet go of the clutch thats when it dies (at the take off) so it is kinda weird.

If the problem is a prime issue and not choke (try a longer ride sometime), it would indicate that the vacuum line beween the petcock and manifold is disconnected or blocked. Or your petcock needs rebuilding.

In my opinion. You should allow the bike to warm up properly every time you ride. If not, moisture collects in the exhaust pipes and eventually leads to rusting from the inside out. Allowing the bike to warm up evaporates that moisture every time keeping your pipes happy.

Additionally, the seals and rings don't get the proper expansion for proper running (hence the need for choke). These bikes are meant to run at a certain temperature for longevity and proper operation. Maybe let that sucker idle in the driveway a bit longer while you drink your coffee.

Also, prime is used only for filling the float bowls. If the bike stalls when you don't use prime then I would follow Oblivions suggestion (obviously eliminating that you have a leak in the float bowls). Verify the vacuum line off the petcock is clear, also the spout from the petcock and the spout off the carb boot.

    Hope this helps!

Yes, you can empty the bowls while the carbs remain on the bike. The fuel bowl drain screw is located just to the side (outboard side) of the fuel drain stub. Removing the bowls with the carb bank in place is an excercise in pain and torment. Pull the carbs, you'll be glad you did.

ok, i will try the suggestions. I have a inline fuel filter, and it is the size of a thumb. It is clear so i can see the fuel going through, sometimes the filter will be filled with gas and leaving on like a little space for a bubble (no prime). But some times it only fills up 1/2 of the filter (no prime). And thats when i usually feel the stalling and get paranoid.

    any inputs?

    Pat

Who installed the fuel filter. Has it run properly since the fuel filter was installed? Will the bike run properly at low throttle while ridding? If the fuel filter is flowing too slowly the bike will stall out.

If this is sounding familiar get a new higher flowing fuel filter.

It was there when I got it. I clean da carb out of it. Yea, the bike runs fine with low throttle.

What kind of fuel filter do you have?

2 things stand out to me,
1st when you put the fuel filter inline did you kink the fuel line (because it's too long now)? I had something like this happen before.
2nd when you have those carbs off I'd check my float settings and needle and seat valves (check the screens are clear and the needles seat properly)
If you break those carbs apart on the rails, be sure to get out the digital camera!!! I also learned this the hard way! 8O
Remember when you reinstall those carbs that they need to be syncd and color tune your mixture settings. (it is suggested that you use the YICS tool to get the best settings possible)
    Good Luck!
