Are the 4 carb breather hoses that run from the bowl drains to the carb top near the choke plungers really necessary? What is their intended purpose?

It seems to me that as long as the carb drain bowl screws are tightened and not leaking, the carb breather hoses serve no purpose besides creating additional clutter. If so, I would like to just leave them off.

Hey 1985xj700, I might be wrong, but on each carb one hose is the float bowl overflow, and the other is the drain. The overflow hose needs to stay so gas won't spill on hot parts if the float needle sticks, but if your drain screws don't leak and you don't use them, you don't really need those hoses.
