My buddy just picked up an 82 seca 650 and with all that I've learned monkeying with my own and from the wealth of knowlegde on this site I've been able to help him get it running. New problem, though. It idles well, but when we go to shift it into first it immediately dies. I've never run into this problem with my bike so I'm stumped. If it was a carb or electrical issue I'd have answers, but I've never dinkered with my transmition. Does this sound like the trannie to you guys? Could it be something simpler that I'm overlooking? Any advice is, as always, appreciated.

I have also not experienced this problem, but my initial guess would be sidestand switch. Bike still thinks the kickstand is down.

It happens with the stand both up and down.

it could be the clutch siezed, or the kick stand safety switch.

to see if its the clutch, roll the bike by hand with it in gear and the clutch pulled. if its really hard to move the clutch is dragging, and probably stalling the engine.

my money is on the switch.

    Stuck Clutch Lever Switch?

Try unplugging the Clutch Lever Switch and see what happens.
If it ain't that ... the Safety Circuit Relay might be the problem.

If you find that it IS the Relay ... you have to order a specific SAFETY CIRCUIT Relay.
They look exactly like a regular relay. Exactly!
    But, they are wired differently.
