I posted this question in XJ Modifications but i dont think that was the proper place for it, so here it is again.

This is my first post here i have been lurking for awhile and need some help now. I have an 82 XJ550 Seca that has some split valves, yes the two inner cylinder exhaust valves actually have splits making it lose its compression. i would like to know which heads are compatible with the stock 550 like is an xj600, fz600 fj600 and years. Or could i take the complete top end(connecting rods, pistons, cylinders, head, camshafts) off a 82 xj650 or 750 and put it on my 550 case.

Also if anyone has a good head for sale complete with valves and cams i would be very interested, otherwise im looking to eBay. Its much cheaper and easier to just replace the whole head, a new exhaust valve is like 65 bucks plus i dont know how much longer the other valves will hold out. My bike has 43,000 miles. Thanks for any help.

chacal probably has them cheaper...im sure he will post in a minute :)

i have only seen that happen on the diesels i work on, and its from too much heat. how was the carb tuning on the bike?

I had a similar problem with my CB700S; two bent valves and the replacements cost $37.00 each. I found a complete head assembly on eBay for $55.00-now I have an extra head plus 6 extra exhaust valves if I need 'em.

I have only had the bike for 2 weeks and never had a chance to sync and set the idle mixture, didn't matter anyway cause the carbs were pretty dirty inside and the bike had 30lbs compression in one cyl and 65 in another from the split valves 125 and 110 for the others, that's another project besides the valves. Yeah i think too much heat and another thing i learned can cause the splitting is your valves being adjusted too tight. I found a guy on ebay that will sell me a complete head with cams for 50 with shipping. I really would like to be able to put a better head on it from a similar engine (bigger valves) for more power but dont know which ones are compatable.

XJ600 will bolt on and supposedly has bigger valves, it's what the fast guys racing XJ550 Seca in our pre82 class run

Quite honestly, with 43K of someone else's (obviously hard and/or poorly maintained) miles on a 550 I'd be looking for a whole new engine. EBay or try this guy: http://www.motolane.com/ I know he has an '83 Seca 550 in the boneyard, I've bought parts off it. How many miles, or the condition of the motor, you'd have to ask him. Regardless, you can probably find a whole new mill for what it'll cost to fix yours.
