It seem's from reading various topics on the site that I need a YICS tool and a colortune. I have been offered the loan of a colortune from a friend who has a fettish with cars, it's 14mm will that be of any use on my xj700.
And on EBAY there is a YICS tool for a different model xj a 650, are YICS tools all the same or are they different according to models.

    My xj650j has 14mm plugs.
I think the maxim x has 12mm plugs
I'm not sure about the 700's.

If it requires a 13/16 socket to remove the plugs it's 14mm

    I think the 12mm takes a 5/8 socket.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks fella's

My plugs take a 14mm socket so I assume that's right. Think I'll accept the offer, if it don't fit nothing lost.

The 12mm is for the 700 Maxim X! The regular XJ 700 has the 14mm plugs. Here is a link to tell you all you want to know about NGK plugs.

    Thanks Bluemaxim.

I searched the NKG site for that info and could'nt find it.

I'll have a go with my pals colourtune but there is an old spanish mechanic a few miles away who rode xjs himself. I went in to his place to buy some plugs and did he get excited when I told him they were for a 700 maxim, he even knew it was a US import.

He's sure to have a YICS and know how to use it so if I can get the bike running well enough I think I'll drop it into him.

My 1985 XJ700 takes 14mm plugs and you'll be happy to know that I've used my color tune several times and it works great!!!
I take it to work where there are lot of mechanics and they have never heard of colortune.... they have now!!
That YICS tool seems to be pretty easy to build from the instructions I got from this site.
    Good Luck

No doubt it's a US import. I still get mad thinking about how Harley has messed up the US market. Glad you got the info. I had no idea it was difficult to find on their web site. I added that link to our links section so it will be available to everyone. Let us know how the tuneup goes!
