Hi Guys..new here today. I have just purchased a project 1983 XJ900. It doesn't run yet. The starter motor spins, but does not engage and turn the motor. The battery is good. It appears to be a mechanical issue. Has anyone had this experience and how difficult is it to repair? Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.
    Cheers

Try taking the starter out and clean the gear assembly. Many starters use a centrifugal engagement mechanism than can stick.
Be sure to grease it properly where it needs it.

You might have a "Starter Clutch" problem. Look at the exploded view of the starter clutch. You'll see the parts you'll need to replace ... to overhaul (re-new) the starter clutch. The book says you'll have to split the cases to do the job. You don't have to ... on the 900 ... email me direct at:
XJ900Owner@aol.com ... and I'll give you my phone number and tell you what you need to do ... My fingers will fall off trying to type it all.
