I have found 1 post close to my issue but not exact.

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... +dies.html

Ok here is the problem. After my bike warms up anout 5 min of running it dies. it is not overheating the guage shows its just getting warm. It dies at every stop and if I give it gas it chokes out. After that as i drive it will die in gear at 40mph as easy as at 0.
I have noticed while going down the road and at stops when this is happening the rpm's going from 1000 to 3500 back to 500 to 3000 then dies.
I had the carbs rebuilt 2 months ago and it ran great I pulled them today and they look fine no clogs in the jets and all floats working as they should.
I dont know if this is related but I am also haveing a starting issue now as well . I replaced the starter relay 2 months ago but now when i try to start the bike it gives off 1 click from the relay and you cant jump it to make it start. however if you can get a spark on the relay then the problem is fixed for a day or so.

    any ideas?

Check your battery and check your alternator output. If you are not charging you will be running on battery and could see some strange stuff.

The relay just clinking makes me suspect the battery/charging circuit. See that you get about 14 volts at 3k rpm. If not your alternator or diode block needs to be checked.

Well here is what i found out. The relay is sticking. if i jump the relay it works fine until it sticks again. The running issue was in the coils. The tie that held the coils on had broken allowing part of the coil to touch the valve cover. When it heated up the coil fouled out. There doesnt seem to be any after effects on the coil from heating up. It took a while to notice it but it seems to have worked......WHEW.

Glad to hear you got that sorted. Ignition coils were my first guess when I read through your post. Beware though, that the coils on the X are VERY sensitive to water. They develop cracks as they age and when moisture gets up in there, it causes all sorts of funky behavior. I haven't been caught in the rain yet so I can't say for sure what happens when you're riding, but I did hose down the bike last week and must have gotten the coils wet because I had a hell of a time trying to get the bike to fire up after that.

Not necessarily related to your problem, but just thought I'd let you know.

well I thought I had it sorted out but i guess not. I have narrowed it down to a vaccum problem ( i hope) . It acts like its out of fuel but its 3/4. and i am getting about 20 mpg at the most. It only tries to die when in town. if on the highway there is no problem.

Does anyone know the correct position for the vaccum lines on this bike? Mine is set up from the carbs (from left to right ) 1st boot is capped, 2nd to the petcock, 3rd goes to the 4th. If this is correct then here we go again. if not i dont know.

3rd goes to the 4th? Interesting. Mine is set up like it was from the factory

    1 - Capped
2 - Vacuum line to petcock
    3 - Capped
    4 - Capped

I'd try that and see if anything changes.

Cap three of those Vacuum Ports and run the Vacuum Line from the other to the Petcock.

This could be as easy as you inspecting the Alternator Brushes and determining if they are within Specs.
Undo the three Cap Screws that hold the Alternator Cover on.
Pull the Cover away from the Alternator.
Look inside the Cover on the back of the Cover.

    Alternator Brushes:
Pair; in Platform affixed to rear of Cover.
    Inspect. Look for "Wear Bars"
    Measure: 10mm or less. Replace.

well cross your fingers. I capped the vac. lines but found the lines on it are the wrong size. I have 1/4 but they are lose. I used 7/32 caps n that fits much better. now i think the fuel line may be too long. so im gonna try to shorten that.
