Who on this forum rebuilds carbs as a business?

I'm reading ALOT of posts here lately about pesky carb issues. It's got me thinking that I'd rather save myself the frustration and not get into the whole mess of trying to rebuild them myself since they seem very temperamental. So is there somebody here that rebuilds them as a side business?

When I owned an '84 Honda Sabre and was a member of the Honda V4 forum, we had several forum members that rebuilt stuff for other members. It was a side business for them. It was great because you got the benefit of having experts doing it for a reasonable cost, folks that studied at great length and understand the pesky nature of certain systems.

Right now, my carbs seem pretty stable, except that it can have a hard time starting in AM. I'd rather just live with it until the riding season ends and then send them off somewhere to have them checked out and rebuilt if needed.

    Anybody here do that?

    Thanks!

this guy is highly thought of on the Kawasaki boards, don't know if he does Yamaha stuff though
someone may offer to do it for ya, i don't know
if you were near by we'd have them off by now
cleaning them isn't hard but you really need the bike to tune them
i found since it got cooler in the mornings mine likes all the choke it can get
see if you can get any more travel on the choke plungers and run some Seafoam thru it

Polock, thanks for the reply, the resource, and the idea on the plungers. Yeah, I'll prolly give in and try a partial cleaning myself just because I don't want to spend too much $$ right now. As I said, the bike is running well, just hard to start when it's bone cold. I was thinking on pulling the carbs and cleaning the bottom end up thinking my enrichment circuits were needing attention. Thanks again!

if you pull the bowl drain screws one at a time and use prime on the fuel valve you get a idea of what you may find in there, maybe even rinse out a chunk of bad stuff before it goes someplace it shouldn't
catch it on a white rag then let decide if further work is necessary
sometimes those drain screws are a b***h so be warned

I believe RickCoMatic does them and does them right but he requires a degree of owner participation ahead of time.

Most probably, the starter jets down in the BOWLS of the carb are clogged, probably plugged solid....VERY common. Once you remove the bowls (which can be done with the carbs on the bike, a pain, but can be done) then with a special tool/drill bit (that I do offer for sale) you can unplug them, and your cold-start problems will magically go away.......!

If you own the bike any length of time, you will need to be in there more than once. After the 1st time it will be old hat. The old give a man a fish, teach a man to fish thing. If you can find a local member to help the first time, even better. You CAN do it. Good luck, Mike

I would be very interested in finding someone who wants a little side cash in Metro Detroit with good carb/bike knowledge and wouldn't mind tutoring a carb/sync job... I want to learn but doing it through ricks old school or the xjcd's sees very intimidating. Also, I'm nervous about this bike being so old (even with extremely low mileage) and not having any real historical data base on service. PM me if you are interested...

Oh...get in there and do it!
Everyone is so helpful here that if you mess something up, you'll have a solution in a heartbeat! I did my first carb. tear down/cleaning last weekend and I have NEVER done any mechanical work before (I've only worked with wood things!).
The first carb on the rack took nearly an hour. I went super slowly and just meticulously placed things in the muffin tins! I did one carb at a time so that if I forgot how it went back together, I'd just take apart the next one! by the time I got to number 4, I was down to 20 minutes and outside of having to re-seal the gaskets, it worked out great!
A terrific tip was for the guitar strings (use one .11 for the small jet holes and .16 for the rest! Worked like a charm!)
Thanks to all...and good luck..JUST DO IT!

Wannaride - Part of me loves your enthusiasm...and part of me thinks I will get half way into it and just start cussing to the roof tops :x . Probably a stupid question but do you have to remove the rack from the bike or can much be accomplished with the carbs on the bike? I am considering delving into this tomorrow but for some reason would feel better if I didn't have to disconnect fuel and air lines. If nothing else I can start to at least get familiar with whats in there...

    One more thought:
On the yamaha site above, you can also print the schematic of the carbs...perfectly clear how everything goes together!

Fuel and air lines very very easy...so is ripping the tank off. Much much easier to take the rack off, but you don't have to disassemble the rack. Just make sure you have something to catch the gas that's in there. I used a turky-roasting tinfoil pan...no mess and has room to work!
Re. the fuel and air lines, clamps (like vice grips or some other type of pincher works. No big deal! Someone had used electrical ties on mine (bummer) Again.. a bit messy but easy. Just take your time. I've found it easier to slide the boots off by starting at the back (pinch to remove) If your fingers don't like trying to get there.. get help from smaller ones!
Always more fun with a friend!

You do have to remove the rack but it is a part of regular maintenance so Yamaha made it relatively easy to do, if its similar at all to the 550s the airbox is made to be able to slide rearward.

All excellent posts! Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm confident I can make it happen with the help from members like you guys. It's what makes these bikes classics in every sense of the word.

The breaking down and cleaning doesn't scare me too much...its the technical stuff like syncing, float levels, fuel mixtures etc that I really don't understand. I know there's tons of info on all of it but still... Guess its time to heed the advice in my signature and leave the shore :?

i can rebuild your carbs no prob and bench sync them if you can remove them from the bike and ship them to me.
125.00 plus shipping will cover it. For best results youll want to sync the m on the bike, It is fairly easy with the sync tool from chacal.
the hardest part is finding the tool to adjust the screws. PM me or call
