How smooth can the idle quality for an old xj get? I have heard some sport bikes that idle so smooth it sounds like a single note on a tenor sax. (BBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR) No skips, popps, burbles, etc. Please post vids of your bike idling.

ive had mine smooth as a babies bottom, but since the last carb cleaning i have yet to get it as smooth, having trouble with sync because when i rebuilt the carbs i think i ruined the throttle shaft seals.

Funny thing now after fattening the mixture adjustment (too lean? the cooler it gets the worse it runs?) and the sync (which it seems like it could benefit from every time you feel like doing it) it needs starting fluid after it sits for a few days. Used to be able to start it by letting it sputter a few times and after that start to turn up the idle adjuster until it starts and runs, but roughly. After it begins to run smoothly (a minute or so) the choke lever becomes operational. Add some lever and the idle instantly speeds up. If I try to start it cold with the choke, it will just crank and the headlight will not come on and it will not start.

I've come to the conclusion that weather, heat, cold all have a great effect on the setting of the pilot mixture screws.
I will get it perfect, like you said no, blurbs, pops, misses.
Then run it at 50 degrees instead of 85 and it's off just a bit.
Very humid days, not just rainy, humid, it has the same issues.
