alrite, well i was jsut bored so i got to taking things apart on my bike and looking, and i thought the "easy" removal of the tank was to jsut romove the bolt under the seat... not soem much, its just some useless rubber, bet you regret saying that as you guys look at some of your kids, lol, anyways, uhh ya so tha tank wouldnt budge, i got to looking, and the bolt is waaaay back there above the carbs and stuff, how the heck is that removed, im at school rite now, so i dont have an exact clear picture in my head, so i cant remember if it is accesed by a wrench, but i dont think so.

10 mm socket. Remove the bolt at the rear of the tank after taking off the seat. Lift and make sure the petcock is in the ON or RES position and remove the vacuum and gas lines. After those are removed, lift further and wiggle it out of the two round rubber things that secure the tank in the front. Installation is reverse of removal. I add some lithium (white) grease to the rubber fittings though to make it go on easier.

    Shooter:

At the rear of the Tank is a "Hold-down" Bolt.
The Hold-down Bolt has an Oval washer below it.
Below the Oval washer is an Oval rubber damper.

Once you take the Hold-down Bolt out and remove the washer and rubber damper ... the Tank is free to be lifted-up off the Bike.

There are two Rubber Bumpers at the front end.
You lift the tank up and draw it back toward the Seat and two horse-shoe type fittings come free of the forward rubber bumpers.

You have to disconnect the fuel line
You have to disconnect the Petcock Vacuum Line
You have to disconnect the Fuel Level Sending Unit (if so equipped)
Then, lift the tank free from the Bike.

Schooter: Rick is right, take out the one bolt that is at the back of the tank and hidden by the seat. Lift the back of the tank up, and disconnect the fuel and vacuum lines. Then...
IF the tank hasn't been off in a while, and you can lift it up in the back ok, it's probably just STUCK to the rubber bumpers that Rick is talking about. "Draw it back" is not really what you'll need to do, more like pull and wiggle, pull and wiggle, pull and wiggle...the front really IS only sitting on/around the two rubber donuts, but they can and do get good and stuck... Take a look at an online parts fiche and you'll see.

I found mine really hard to get off, probably never been off before? A lot of wiggling. Also, I didn't realize how easy unplugging the wires for the fuel level meter was, so I did it the hard way when I was replacing the tank, and pulled off that wire with the little ring around the round contact.

The right way is to find the connector for those wires, which is unexpectedly Behind the tank, under the seat, on the left hand side of the fuse box(left hand as you're sitting on the bike) Unhook it and pull off tank, petcock, gas gauge and wires together. Nobody ever mentions the gas float switch, only the petcock, I'm not sure why, maybe some bikes don't have fuel gauge? Believe me, trying to find that connector when I accidentally unplugged those wires was fun, I spent a lot of time crawling all over bike looking for a connector attached to nothing:)

Edit: i know Rick mentioned the gas level sending unit, I meant in other posts, I looked at before I took my tank off.

The 650 Maxim didn't come with a fuel gauge Mike. I'm pretty sure 650's, 550's and the 400's don't have one. 700's and up do. Someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong though.

My XJ650 Maxim has a sending unit in the tank. Of course, that's because I have a 750 tank on. :)

The first time I ever pulled the original tank off, I had to pull and wiggle..................correction -- I had to yank and twist, rotate, pull, pry, and tug til the rubber let go of the horseshoes. Since then, it goes on and off easily. Snug, firm, but easy.

Hmm, I've got a SECA 750. On mine I don't have to remove the bolt, I just have to remove a U-shaped spring clip that clips to the bolt, and a plate that's held down by the clip. Is this just a SECA thing?

    No. That's Stock! Very nice.

Most of us have bikes where the Slide-on Clip got lost ... so, we have to make-do with nuts and bolts.
