i want to start by saying Please do not laugh at this question.

I feel crazy having to ask this question. My 1981 650 is running rich, i just purchased it 2 days ago and the gas smell from the exhaust is driving me crazy!!

I want to start by doing the easy thing...checking the airfilter and making sure that it is not clogged.

Here's where the problem comes in. i don't know how to access it. If anyone on here can post pictures or tips i would really appreciate it. Please don't post on this thread if all you're going to do is make fun of me, i am really interested in getting this bike running well, problem is I'm a car guy who is just getting into bikes.

I don't want to take it to a shop for a job that should be DIY.

I appreciate in advance any help that anyone can give me.

    vic

Hello Vic, welcome to you. I'm taking the liberty of moving this thread to the appropriate forum, no charge.
Your air filter is accessable by lifting your seat. You should see a fuse box secured to a flat piece of black plastic about 10" x 6". There are three phillips head screws holding this lid in place. Remove them and you have accessed your air filter box.
May I suggest that you make the single best purchase you will ever make and get a maintenance manual. They are cheap and will give you loads of information on your new toy.
    Welcome again!

And the only time anyone on here will make fun of you is if you have an ugly sister.

You can take it for a VERY short drive to confirm that it's a clogged filter.
You can use compressed air to blow out the filter, just like on a car, but nothing beats a brand new filter (from Chacal, our friendly, neighborhood parts-man).

    Welcome to the site!

Don't use compressed air if you're using a cotton type filter like a K&N or similar though!

Buy one K&N and some cleaner/oil and you never have to buy another.

i took it apart and it looks ok, i'm going to get another one anyway, it's not an expensive part and that way I can eliminate it as a problem.

    Thanks for all the advice.

My K&N for my 750 was $42.00 but that is the last one I have to buy.

I overfilled my oil and it went into the airbox and saturated my air filter.Used a k and n recharger to get the oil out.i reckon it worked ok but think I should have jsut bought a new filter for it.
