    HELP!!!!

I'm confused.....now, that's nothing new or special, but this time it's serious!

My confusion is profound, and deep, and I'd like to hear from any and all XJ700 owners who have original-paint bikes.

In looking over the original Yamaha fiches, sales brochures, and current parts lists, as best as I can determine, the following are the list of all 1985 and 1986 XJ700 and XJ700-X original color codes, names, and my descriptions of how the color can be described.

I'll go through them one at a time, and explain:

    1985 XJ700 Maxim Colors:

    1985 XJ700N/NC:
    6G New Yamaha Black
    2U Super Red

    1985 XJ700XN/XNC:
    KU Deep Scarlet
    KX Deep Violet

1985 XJ700 N/NC (air-cooled models). "6G" is the factory color code for what is called New Yamaha Black, a deep glossy non-metallic black. This is a no-brainer, no questions about this one.

1985 XJ700 N/NC (air-cooled models). "2U" is the factory color code for what is called Super Red, which is also specified as the correct color for 1982 XJ750 Maxim models, as well as 1983 XJ550 Maxim, 1983 XJ650 Maxim, and 1983 XJ900RK Seca models.

As far as I can tell, the "2U" color is actually (for reasons unknown) the same color as the 1981-82 XJ750 Seca #63 "Brilliant Red" color-----it's a bright, very pearlescent/metallic "sparkly" red. 1983 XJ900RK Seca are also specified as being painted in this "2U" color; but all of the USA versions are actually painted in the same #63 Brilliant Red.

If anyone has a red 1985 XJ700N or NC model that has an original paint job that DOESN'T MATCH this paint color desciption, please let me know!

1985 XJ700 XN/XNC (water-cooled models). "KU" is called Deep Scarlet by Yamaha, and it's a semi-bright red metallic, a pretty (and pretty common) color for this model. No questions here.

1985 XJ700 XN/XNC (water-cooled models). "KX" is called Deep Violet by Yamaha, and is a darkish maroon metallic/pearlescent color with a violet (bright purplish) undertone. This is SUPPOSED to be a 1985 color, but the only two times I have seen this color is on original side covers, and they are side covers from 1986 XJ700 non-X model!

    WASS-UP WITH THAT????

Can I hear from any owners who have one of these original reddish-purplish colored bike, and tell me what year and model it is?

    1986 700 Maxim Colors:

    1986 XJ700 S/SC:
    MV Red-E-Sparkle
    MW Bluish-Black

    1986 XJ700 XS/XSC:
    6G New Yamaha Black
    MX Sparkle Maroon

1986 XJ700 S/SC (air-cooled models). "MV" is called Red-E-Sparkle by Yamaha, and I have no idea of what this color is......never seen one, either pictured or in a brochure or used parts or..........ANYONE HAVE ONE OF THESE?

1986 XJ700 S/SC (air-cooled models). "MW" is called Bluish-Black by Yamaha, and it's a dark navy/royal blue metallic (very beautiful color). THE PROBLEM IS THAT I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS COLOR ON A 1986 MODEL, ONLY ON 1985 MODELS.....notice this is similar to the problem stated above on the 1985 XJ700-X models, with the "KX" deep violet color....supposed to be a 1985 color, but only seen on 1986 models........?? So------CALLING ALL BLUISH-BLACK PEOPLE OUT THERE......WHAT YEAR AND MODEL IS YOUR BIKE?

1986 XJ700 XS/XSC (water-cooled models). "6G" is the factory color code for what is called New Yamaha Black, a deep glossy non-metallic black. This is a no-brainer, no questions about this one.

1986 XJ700 XS/XSC (water-cooled models). "MX" is the factory color code for what is called Sparkle Maroon, a dark brown-ish maroon, heavyily metallic and pearlescent. Again, this is a no-brainer, no questions about this one, seen quite a few of them out there.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

My X looks to be the "deep scarlet" variety, but I'm not 100% certain as to whether it's original paint or not... I know the tank isn't stock for my model.

You looking to start stocking paint, too?

Hey Switz, yes, yours is an '5 non-X model, it should use that 2U/#63 Super Red or Brilliant Red as described above.....is that what you see?

Schmuck, I've seen some of the up-close and personal pictures of your bike, and yes, it is a Deep Scarlet painted bike.

while my bike has been repainted there is steill some original color under the petcock and inside the side covers under the sticker is there a place that tells me the paint code on the bike?? I believe mine was originall the brighter metallic red you are speaking of and was a very nice color but the original owner repainted it the dark blue metallic for whatever reason..

My 86 XJ700XS is black with gold and my 86XJ700S is a dark purple with silver. Just thought I would put my two cents in.

Hey thanks guys........X, unfortunately there is no place within the VIN that codes for the bike color. I think the only place you'll find that is on the original sale invoice.

Mrcarb.....thanks. The black bike is the 6G (glossy, non-metallic black) and the dark purple is the MX sparkle maroon (deep, VERY dark purpleish maroon with lots of metallic in it-----a very pretty color!).

Switz, drop me a PM.....I actually do have this paint developed, I just am awaiting final authorization on figuring out how to "legally" ship it (you'd think that would be easy; boy, would you ever be wrong!).

By the way, the 2U is Super Red and the #63 is the Brilliant Red and they are two different colors. The #63 Brilliant Red is what is known as a "brilliance" color in the paint biz, and it's REAL tricky to apply correctly (not only are there base and a mid-level color coats, but the high proportion of reflective and pearlescent coloring in this color makes the final finished "color" quite variable depending on how deeply you apply the base color, the mid-color, the relative thickness of the base vs. the mid-color coats, the air pressure used (if out of a spray gun), etc.

My xj750xn is not one of those colors, it is kinda of a medium-dark metallic blue. I can not verify that it is the original color, but I believe it is.

That sounds like the same colour as my 750xn. Could it be that that colour was available to Canada and not the US?

The medium/dark metallic blue is this color:

It's a really dark "navy" blue and is absolutely beautiful when new, but fades to a duller, lighter blue that becomes very un-beautiful. And so you guys have it on your 1985 models, eh? Could be a Canada thing, or ????

Thanks for the updates. Could you do me another favour? Pull off your side covers, and see if it says anything about the model year (1985 or 1986) on them? If no mention of year is made, could you post what the "engine family" designation code is from the tune-up specs label ont he inside of (I think) the right side cover? That engine family ID code also specifies (in coded form, of course) what year the engine (and thus the bike) is supposed to be for...............

    Thanks!

I've got the deep scarlet too. Its orangy purple pearlesant. Unfortunatly the paint is scared and sad looking, so i plan on painting her either a metallic sage green or a cobalt blue

Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback and info. I guess the dark metallic blue color was used on a variety of '85 and '86 models, odd that Yamaha didn't list it that way. I guess that's one issue out of the way......

Japple99, that's a really pretty bike, but I do not believe it's an original color (but who knows anymore!!)

Tonyc (Zman), sorry, no paper catalog, but I suppose you could copy/paste and print out the parts list from the website forums and make your own "custom catalog"!

    Thanks!
