Is there a tried and true master cylinder upgrade out there?

I bought the $67 job from partsnmore.com. Works well, but if you have SS lines you may have problems getting the banjo on the output of the MC. I had Chacal make a custom upper hose for my '82 650 Maxim. Also, it isn't designed for the Maxim handlebars, so the mirror is rotated a bit. It makes it stick out further. It is left hand threaded so it'll accept the stock mirror. I simply bent my left mirror to (kinda) match. I find the mirrors work better out that far.

That was right after I installed it. I've got some other pictures to upload.

My bars don't have that "Rams" horn downsweep from up high like that.

What is that M/C from? I am looking for a M/C that may give more output hydraulic pressure.

You can put any modern remote resevior M/C on - the banjo bolts are the same for all JAP bikes. This means you really have a lot to choose from - CBR6/9/1000, R1/R6, GSXR6/750/1000, ZX6/9/10........

Hey Martin.....there really isn't going to be any additional "pressure" available to you regardless of what master cylinder you use.....and the amount of pressure that any properly functioning master cylinder provides is more than sufficient. Master cylinders vary in the size of the piston BORE whih primarily determines the AMOUNT of fluid that can be passed for any given amount of lever movement; the dual-caliper bikes require a greater amount of fluid, and thus have a larger piston BORE, but not much (if any) difference in pressure.

The factory master cylinder, if it's operating properly, is more than sufficient for these bikes. Upgrading the brake lines and perhaps going to lighter discs can also gain you some improvement.

I do offer the aftermarket brake master cylinder (like the one that fuzz used, except in the bigger-bore version) but as he mentioned, it requires the use of a different master cylinder hose versus stock (thanks for fuzz, I have those, too!) and will have the mirror issue as he explained...although your bars don't have quite as much of a "ramshorn" sweep as do the XJ650 Maxim bars, they are pretty close, and if you look at your original master-cylinder body, you'll notice that it mounts to the bars in a "tilted" or "angled" position (horizontally). The aftermarket m/c's are a "straight" mounted orientation (which is what was used on all XJ models EXCEPT the XJ650 and XJ750 Maxims, and the XJ1100 models, all of which used a "tilted" master cylinder) and that is what causes the wayward-mirror situation.

Of course, I also have the brand new OEM master cylinder which is correct for your bike available, too (but they're quite pricey!).
