You guys may have a different view since some of u are city-its, and well dont like on a farm. But i was thinking about removing my mufflers, finding an exhaust 90 degree elbow, pointing it up, and having a rain-guard on it, i'd put those on, see how, if at all it back fires, and it doesnt ill weld some washers in for soem back pressure, and if it does back fire im pretty sure i can return them, worht the risk? oh ya i'd paint them black, unless i find hi-temp chrome paint, so yup. MAybe, in the future, well i want a john deere paint scheme, throw in a high performance 600 4 cylinder, for a crotch rocket, probably but the whole crotch rocket cuz who knows what ill do for transmissing, may use rear swing arm and make it, gasp, chain drive, efi, ya. And i would try and find ether a nice yoshi or aftermarket exhaust, straight pipes, or chrome stack with rain guards- yahoo! lol this is if the mechanical engineer field is highpaying, dont have a wife/gf, or a really understanding one. and so on yup

I'm from little ol' Mt Sterling, KY and that's about as small town as you get and my family does have a farm.

I think it would look awful. The thing about bikes that makes them beautiful are sexy lines. The only thing that upright pipes look good on are off road four wheel drive vehicles and even that's questionable.

My question here on all you're talking about though is... why?

not sure what city, suburban, or rural upbringing may change but......

    in my opinion of course,

the lines of your bike will not match what you are talking about doing. its just going to look out of place. for something extreme like that you really need to design everything around it to "fit" right.

also.......YOU WILL BE DEAF. no amount of washers welded in, or baffles, or glass packing will make it quiet enough to aim at your head. you don't realize how loud even the stock mufflers are until they are aimed at your ear while you are under full load at 6000rpms!

for reference, i installed my 4-1 header tonight, and havent fabbed the tailpipe yet. i rode it home knowing it was going to be LOUD, but HOLY CRAP my ears were bleeding after a 20 minute ride. that was with an open pipe aiming straight back, with the end of it right at the footpeg. even a baffled pipe aimed up at your head would be deafening i think.

often i come up with weirdo ideas......the only way to feel out the looks is with photo shop, or hack something together with duct tape and see how it looks.

one thing to think about.....your passenger. where will they put their limbs, and will the exhaust be blasting them in the face?

My issue with a radical modification of his bike in particular is that schoot has one of the cleanest XJ's out there that I've seen that hasn't had a whole lot of restoration work done to it already. With not a lot of work he could have a *really* sharp stock (but not quite stock) XJ... which is exactly the kind of look I really really go for.

But then again, it's not my bike and different looks make different people happy. :)

schooter I "dig" the idea of John Deere theme. Now I'm not sure about the weight distribution but can you put a small faux tiller on the back? Run pipes past your passenger and up, but below their shoulders, just above the tillers in an "up/back" position. You'll definitely need "additional" lights/flashers.
If we have a "Win a date with Schooters sister contest"... I win!

Schooter, you have a VERY nice Maxim. Don't screw it up. If anything, find yourself a set of stock mufflers, although the Honda ones you have on there look nice. If you're bored and want to work on the bike, install an in-line fuel filter. Adjust your rear brake pedal and mechanism according to the book. CHECK YOUR VALVE CLEARANCES. But don't turn it into a tractor.

Dude, you've got a really sharp boke man. If you want to mod a bike to look like a Juan Deer, get another bike in not as great of shape and make that the one. Don't kill another clean looking stock appearing bike man!

well... didnt plan on having it out that far... but by the sounds of it i ouch to... but it wouldn't have a slach cut and then a rain guard would be over it... and i would make it, eh 3 -4 inches higher too. do you guys know wah ta rain guard is? its a piece of metal that flaps wyhen the engine is running and remains over the exhaust when it isn't i jsut think it looks good on any vertical exhaust...
How much are shortys? cuz those would work great... justuse that as the vertical pipe and put a rain guard o nthe end.... idk. i may or may not end up doing it.. see how much spare money i have.and wizard.... im not trying to get attention.... i was just loking at all these custom projects and i like tinkering.... jsut wanted to do something that relates to my life... john deeres.
but ya if someone could tell me how much shorty's are and kinda a rough estimate on their lenght... did you have to rejet?

    Tinkering or hacking?

You have a nice bike don't ruin it and loose your investment.

Man I don't know whats up with so many people talking down about someone wanting to make their bike more their own .... i say do what you want man, its your bike, what's important is what you like.

I imagine you mean something like this for the "exhaust flapper"?

    Schooter:

You don't make cosmetic changes because you want to make the Bike look good at the expense of having a Bike run good.

What you should be doing, right now, is getting yourself focused to get the Stock Bike running at its peak performance.
When you start making modifications to the Intake and Exhaust characteristics of an XJ-Bike ... you might knock the Bike out of where it can be Fine-tuned the best.

Modifications to the Intake and Exhaust will likely require that your Carbs will need to be Re-Jetted.
Remember, you were the guy who was struggling with getting-off the Gas Tank a few days ago.

Do you honestly think you have all the tools and ability to remove the Carbs ... Re-Jet them ... replace them ... recognize the new condition of Tuning with regard to the Re-Jetting and continue removing and replacing the Carbs until you get the right Jetting for performance?

I think before you dive into the deep end of the pool ... you ought to show us how well you bike is running ... right now ... by pulling the Spark Plugs and lining them up -- 1, 2, 3, 4 ... snapping a picture of the business-ends of those Plugs and reading them for us.

The Spark Plugs tell a story about how well the Engine is Tuned and Performing.
What is the story that your Spark Plugs are telling you about how well your bike is set-up right now!

If you buy a new set of Plugs and replace the ones you pull to do your Plug Read for us ... you'll be doing your own maintenance installing a new set of Plugs ... while at the same time showing us your present state of Tuning ... how thing look to you ... and what you think needs to be done to improve the situation if need be.

rick, just so its clear, i didnt mean any disrespect to you or anyone else... i just dont want to see someone not do something they really want to do because everyone is telling them not to. I definitely want him to be fully informed of what all is entailed with a mod like that before going at it, but i also want to make sure he knows it IS possible, but might be more work than he's willing to do.

On a couple other forums, there's guys that do this kind of thing all the time, major modifications, followed by carb rejets, etc, but that is a lot more work than most people are willing to go to.

lol alrite you guys..... really my plan was for about 10 YEARS in the future... but i will still keep my HONDA pipes.... and jsut for fun so i have somehting to do this winter, is rig an exhause.... ok, i may, if it looks cool, or sounds cool, is use it for festivals... or whenever i feel like it. i dont want to completely change my complete exhaust. So ya that whole thing about John Deerizing it was 10 years form now... whether the engines junk or not, and if i have the time.. to put a hi performance 600 in it.

and all mighty Rick, the reason, should have known, was that when the bolt was out, and i was trying to take off the tank, i jsut carelessly grabbed under the tank, and doing so i graqbbed the mount for teh tank... which was connected to the frame... so i was essentially trying to lift my bike... but when i took it out again i looked around a noticed it infact wasnt a bolt to hold on a rubber anti vibe thing, and so i grabbed the tank, and it came off as easy as pie... jsut got to get to NAPA and get a filter.
Thinking of changing the plugs this winter.. redo-ing the bike this winter, and ill show ya the plugs if i remember... Anyone got some good hi performance plugs that they use and are relatively cheap? of should i jsut go with NKG or Champion el- cheapo's. Whoo running out of breath.
Finally SWITCH that is EXACTLY what i was tyhinking about doing.. like with shorty mufflers, but they're wal to long, 12 inches would look gay, i think.

Go for it Schooter. Make the the bike "your own" if you like. You seem to be much like myself and can't let things as they come from the factory (there can always be improvements made in my opinion)
I like to tinker (my middle name) and have never like any scoot the way it comes from the factory. I don't see how a model can please the masses anyways. Everyone is different and needs to have things their way or we're just not happy.
I thought of the idea of an upswept exhaust with raincaps on (had then on a couple pickup trucks I owned and they worked and looked great)
With my saddlebags on it wouldn't work so good on my bikes however. Go for it and post a pic for us when you "git-r-done"!!
