I have searched numerous times, and can't find a definitve answer. What other wheels will fit on a 81 650 maxim. Will wheels from other xj's bolt up? I don't care for the slash cut wheels that are on it, and i was looking for something else. Wires would be ideal, but other style mags will work too.

Hello Metalmike, you can run the rims off of a turbo and we have a gentleman from Spain who rigged up spoked wheels (don't have a clue how but it looks wicked).
With the turbo rims, you must procure the rear drum along with the rim as the drum is slightly larger than the Maxim unit. You should also get the whole front suspension and brakes to go with the front rim, you might want to upgrade to the dual front disk that comes with the rim.
If you have access to a machine shop, you can tinker with different rims from different bikes but that isn't cheap nor easy.

The wire rims came from a Virago 750 ( don't know the year)
I have all the 650 Turbo rims and parts for sale, if you like the look. .

as far as style of wheels go, i was looking for a 5 spoke or wire wheels pattern, or a solid wheel in the rear with spokes up front. I had come across wheels for an xj700 that looked ok, but would they work that is the question. I had even thought about making solid covers for the wheels to just clean em up.

Having returned from my Eastern Europe XJ adventure I find myself without a running bike as I have left the 650 in Croatia. I have a 750 Seca in pieces in my garage and I plan on doing another complete rebuild. This time I am going to be smart about it and do it in the winter.

One of the things I will do on this bike is use SPOKED wheels front and back. Now I've heard the early Virago wheels can be used and I will check into that but if anyone has any other options I would appreciate it.

I have to ask...why did you leave the 650 in Croatia?

Because next year I plan on going back and driving from Croatia to Istanbul and then I will either take the ferry up to Odessa or the coastal highway down through Greece.

    Decisions, decisions ;)

Here's the Spanish Wonderbike with Virago Spokes !
    I think it's cool !

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... spain.html

I don't know if it's a direct bolt-in or if spacers need to be trimmed / added in the rear, but it should be easy to sort out.

Hey Gwyndwr how much was it to ship a bike to Europe anyway ???
