I've been searching through the forums for a bit now for people that have installed the Harley Sportster mufflers on their Maxim's and saw a few pics of the end results... great look and all.

Anyway, I just picked up a Sportster exhaust earlier today to replace my old stockers with holes from rust on them. I know there is a bit of modification and fab work that should be done to get them to fit. Does anyone have any pics of the process or closeups on how they got them to work?

I am assuming that you have a 650 since that is what I put harley mufflers on and can give information on what I did. Fit the mufflers to where it looks good and makes for the least amount of work which I found for me was near where the original sat. Mark the place where you want to cut which for me was right around the chrome side cover. Cut off the old mufflers (always satisfying cutting metal things up). Take your muffler and find a piece of pipe that fits inside. Cut to length, and do another fit. Tack the pipe to your old system, pull the system off and put a final weld around the pipe. Its up to you to find a way to mount the mufflers to the original mount. I got some chrome exhaust straps and bent to fit. Long story short you will have to fit a piece of pipe to you old exhaust that you can slip your mufflers on to. Not hard just time consuming and after its all done it is very satisfying to see you new system on an old friend. Sorry it was long winded hope it helped and if I can give you anymore information let me know.
    Good luck.
    Andrew
I will try and find some pics for you

Thanks Andrew, much appreciated. If you can get pics, especially where you decided to mount that would be great. :) That's the part more than anything I'm concerned with because that's the place I'm concerned I'm going to make it look like a hack job. The goal I have for this bike is to give it a look of stock, but not quite stock. Basically where no one would know that custom work was done to it unless they also just happened to have a 650 Maxim as well.

No hurry Andrew. I'm not planning on putting them on likely until next week anyway. Don't work to hard with those classes. :)

I have Harley mufflers on mine. I think they are off of a Sportster (not sure 'cause I bought them at a swap meet)
They slid right onto the collector with no problem (same size opening) and I made hanger brackets out ot aluminum flat stock.

Those are definitely Sportster's PainterD. If you look on the underside of them they'll be marked that they are made for 883-1200. If there's any way you can get a closer pic of the mounts, that would be awesome.

No more photos for now. That gal of mine lent the camera out to her kids that went on a trip. It will be awhile before we get it back (if infact they even return it...you know how kids are!!)

can someone explain how mufflers with same side mounts (such as those of a sportster) are getting mounted on opposite sides of the bike without one of the mounting tabs being upside down?...think about it.

I don't know about all Harley mufflers, but mine have tab welded in the middle center of each muffler. I can swap them side for side with no visible difference. I just measured from the rear footpeg mount to the muffler and cut the hanger straps the proper length. Then I drilled the right size holes in them and bolted them up, good and solid. Very simple. It took about 5 minutes to mount the mufflers on the bike.

mine had a threaded bung on each one, i aimed each bung to thew inside and ran my own flat stock from the bike chassis to the bung, and threw a bolt in. no upside down.
