Ok, so I got my 8'82 750 Maxim running...kinda. It only runs when I squirt some gas into the open en of the carbs, so I'l be rebuilding the carbs in the future. But it does run so I can start planning the mods to the suspension now that I know it won't just be a pretty parts bike when I'm done.
I removed the back shocks and did some mock-ups using solid bars to determine how low I want this bad boy to sit. The plan is to drop it about 2 -2 1/2 inches in the rear which means I'll need shocks that are 10" eye to eye. I did find some west eagle short shocks http://www.accessoryinternational.com/M ... STOM_PARTS but they apparently are for a 250 Virago. I don't think these would handle the weight of a 750. Has anybody seen or know of some 10 -10.5 short shocks that could handle the weight of a 750???
    TIA,
    Nemo

I've got 10.5" shocks on mine, bought them off eBay. For one-up riding they are great, but add a passenger and I've got a hardtail chopper! I rarely have a passenger so it wasn't an issue but what cropped up was the signal light stalks the rubbed on the tire on serious bumps. This caused the signal wires to short out and blow the main fuse. I modified the stalks and wire placement and no longer have that problem.

I have some brand new 11.5 in shocks for a harley. I tested em on my 650 before I chopped it and they looked really good.

I've got 10" shocks from a harley on ebay for $20-30, They let the bike sit nice and low, and they are meant for a bike that was alot heavier than my 650, so even two up they hold great. They give a way better ride than the stockers.

I bought 10" aftermarket shocks from a local shop. Guys have been using them on harleys so I know they will take the weight. Only problem is price $150 a pair.

Thanks for the inof guys... So it looks like I'm looking for some Harley shocks. Will I have to do any modifications to the bottom mounst or are the shocks the same width as stock shocks?
Johno8, I'm not worried about the signal problem, I will be chooping the tail of and putting a custom fender on and making a single custom seat so it's a solo rider. :D But thanks for the heads up! I figured I'd be shelling out close to 200 clams to get what I need. I'm gonna be doing some other mods as well so I want it to look right when I'm done! :)

Mad_Bohemian...hope it turns out as good as what you are hoping for. I really like the ride my shorter shocks provide, but they're not Harley types...I'll keep them in mind when I need to replace these ones. Good luck with your build!

As far as the bottom mounts go, they are different on the Harley, you need to pull the rubbers out of the new shocks, and replace them. I work at a parts store, so I bought a sway bar link kit for a chev cavalier ( Moog # k5252) for about $4 trimmed down the outer diameter and pressed it into place in the eye of the shock

Does anyone have manufacturer/part #'s ? I found some 10" from Licks but would like to find something a little cheaper if possible.
Johno- I really like what you did w/your bike. Very similar to the direction I want to go. Got some ?'s for ya....
Do your forward controls feel solid? They look like they might have some flex to them....but it's hard to tell from pics. I'm wondering , too how/where you found the armatures for the brake and shift. ( by 'armature' I mean the part between the brake/shifter 'pedal' and the connecting rod to the brake/tranny) What brand/model shocks do you have??
    TIA,

Sorry I didn't reply yesterday but I was on a Children's Charity poker run here and was gone all day. Anyway, to answer your questions. The forward controls are extremely solid as I made the brackets out of 1/4 " plate steel...I can stand on the floor boards and there is no flex in the brackets. I'll be removing them in the next month for chroming (winter and snow eh?) and will post the exact dimensions including a full size template for those who like to trace things. = ) The armatures as I think you mean, are as described here...the shifter side was a used part from a Harley set up I found at Toad's Cycle here in Dartmouth. The assembly included the small shaft that I had to find a bushing for to keep it snug in the drillled hole of that bracket. (if this is confusing let me know and I'll take some closeup pics of the assembly). The brake side was the other part of that Harley set up and I needed to weld an extra length of steel bar to give me the length I needed to connect the rod to it and clear the engie on the right side. Again I can clarify anything that isn't clear here...I'm still half asleep this morning. The shocks were found on eBay, I just kept looking until I found a pair that were 10" from eye to eye, I'll try to find out the brand for ya. Any other questions, just let me know. Take care.

    Phil
