    Hi Everyone,

I just picked up an '81 XJ650H Maxim and joined your group. I do not think it has YICS. :?: Can anyone direct me to instructions on how to sync the carbs? I'm borrowing a digital sync tool but I'm not sure what to adjust on the carbs.

Also, I believe the motor has a manual cam chain tensioner. :?: Can anyone tell me how to adjust it.

I haven't been able to find a shop manual for the bike yet.

    Thanks Much

    Basic sync process http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... =sync.html

If your tensioner is a manual adjust http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... chain.html

If it is an automatic here are Rickcomatic's instructions:

    Simple.
    Pull the Plugs.
    Pull the Ignition Crankcase Cover.
Wrench the Engine over two full revolutions in its normal rotation.
Come to a smooth and gradual stop.

Reverse the direction and jack-over the engine backward in a sudden movement.
This will present the slack in front of the tensioner and it will automatically take up the slack.

    Repeat several times.
Have an assistant tap on the Tensioner with the butt of a hammer handle while you are reversing the direction on the engine.

The tensioner should take-up the slack and life in Iowa will be better and less noisy.

The 'roll forward, push back' procedure is to suddenly reverse the direction of the motor's internals so that slack in the camchain is suddenly in front of the AUTOMATIC tensioner. The manual tensioner requires a different procedure, see the link Bill posted. If your bike doesn't say "YICS" on the valve covers and the side covers somewhere, it probably ISN'T so equipped.

It's not hard but as Fitz said you need to know if you have the manual or automatic. Mine is an 82 and is automatic. The 81s I believe did not have the YICS engine but I can;t swear the tensioner is manual

I can't speak for the maxim's, but my 81 750 seca has both YICS and an automatic tensioner, for whatever that's worth.
