    Maxim XJ650J 1982.

Went for a long, windy, highway ride yesterday and everytime I got around 4500 rpm's the bike vibrated like crazy which sucked because that was right around 55 mph. Over 5 grand it was fine as well as 4 and under. I've read some of the other posts about the chain tensioner? Is that what I should be looking for? When I first noticed it I was thinking it was some kind of engine mount problem but that's just a guess.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Doesn't hurt to reset the tensioner. However this just may be the XJ vibe. These bikes new had a vibration at that RPM. Bike mags even wrote about it. It doesn't hurt the engine just annoyies the rider.

Haha, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I always noticed the vibration (had the bike for about 3 years now). It has always been kind of annoying but it just seemed that this time it was a bit more noticable. Other than that it was a fun ride and this baby ran right along with an old Suzuki 750 and a '01 1600 midnight star with 2 heavy people on it. Not bad I guess, haha.
I just get slightly worried when the speedo is buried, but it's cool.

Ok , didn't know you had the bike that long. Then I would do the tensioner and maybe buy a mechanics stethoscope if it doesn't go away. Could be time to replace the cam chain.

It didn't seem quite as bad last night, although I didn't go for a real long ride under windy conditions either. I'll have to check the tensioner when I get a chance. Thanks again.

I have an 81 650 Maxim and it does the same thing - just runs a little rougher with more vibration at 4500 rpm.
