Choke adjustment??

    When I try to use the choke on the bike for those cold morning starts it doesn't work. The bike will start up quicker but then die just as quick. I have resorted to this procedure.

    1 turn choke on
    2 press start
    3 quickly turn choke off
    4 try to maintain idle with throttle

    I know that this is not the correct way, but it works.

    I was quite frustrated this weekend when my brother in law goes out to his bike with 10x the mileage on it, turns the choke on, hits start and the bike purrs like a kitten.

    I WANT THAT. i just don't know how to get it.

    any help is going to be very appreciated, thanks guys.

    It sounds like your idle jets may be clogged a bit. When it's colder, it takes a bit more gas to start the motor as gas doesn't atomize as well in colder temperatures. The carbs have small idle jets, and large main jets. So when you start with the choke on and no throttle, the only gas entering the cylinder is from the small idle jets. When you turn the choke off and give it throttle, gas is entering from both small idle and large main jets. I imagine the bike will start with the choke on and some throttle. While this will get the bike running, it is easy to foul the plugs giving it a lot of gas when cold.

    Your best bet is to run it however you can for now, and once winter is here for good, pull the carbs off. Read the fine tutorials that are here on the site, and give your carbs a good cleaning. A novice, taking their time, can clean the carbs in several hours over two nights. One night to remove and disassemble, and place parts in solvent to soak, and a second night to put back together. This is a good time to learn how to synchronize and tune your carbs, which will help your idle, and give you more power.
