i recently bought my xj and have a couple of questions about it. 1st is it normal for the gear box to clikck loudly while changing gears? it shifts fine but seems loud while dong so. 2nd what is the best way to turn gas off while the bike is parked? i left it on and the carbs started overflowing with fuel. my petcock only has on, res, and pri..... I guess my question is how to i turn gas off?

You should not be leaking gas in ON or RES. Sounds like a bad petcock to me but I'm sure others will chime in...

You should leave the petcock in the On position, there is a vacuum line coming off one of the carbs that opens a valve inside the petcock when engine vacuum comes up(I.e. When the engine is running). It's no longer like the old days when there was an off position.

    Likely flooding causes?

    Float needle not seating

    Float level adjusted too high

Should also check the petcock as it should not flow gas with the engine off.

The function of the Petcock shutting-off is limited to the fitment of and O-ring Seal at the thn of a Piston Valve.

If the O-ring wears-out or fails to seat ... the Carb Floats will have to hold-back the entire contents of the Fuel Tank.
They're battle with Gravity usually finds Gravity the winner and the leak begins.

The Fuel Tank will empty into the Carbs.
The Carbs will overflow or spill through the Emulsion Tube.
If they overflow through the Emulsion Tubes ... Fuel flows into the Engine.
Leaking into Cylinders with Open Valves.
Down through Piston Ring gaps into the crankcase.

Several factors can cause the Petcock to Leak.
    Worn O-ring at Vacuum Valve
Worn-out Wafer Disc inside Metering Body
Diaphragm Membrane leaking fuel through Vacuum Hose.

And scratched or gouged diaphram plunger o-ring SEAT in the main machined body of the petcock......which is the real reason many people say the petcock rebuild kits "don't work".......check that seat CAREFULLY (like under a magnifying glass carefully) for any scoring or scratches. If present, they must be eliminated or the petcock replaced.
