I had my XJ700XS up on a jack to replace the front tire. I noticed when I put the front rim back on, that there is considerable drag on the front brakes. It will only free spin about 3/4 of a turn. Is this normal or do I have a problem with my calipers/master cylinder? I know some drag is expected, but this seem excessive. I drove it around the block a few times and put it back on the jack and the condition persists. It didn't seem to hurt the performace, but the 700cc engine can clearly compensate for the drag.

Not normal. Check your rotor is it always the same spot? I know you just got tires I assume the shop would have said something if the wheel was bent.

Check your reassembly - make sure everything is right.

When we gonna tune that thing?

B1, I had the same issue earlier this year. Basically, I had to rebuild the caliper with new seals. Also rebuilt the master cylinder at the same time and replaced the brakes lines with a single braided steel line. Not too hard to do, a little messy. The biggest problem I had is that the piston was pretty much siezed into the the cylinder. After several failed attempts at removal, I ended up reconnecting it to the brake line and bleeding, then used the pressure of the brake system to easily pump the piston out. Have a pail or something to catch the escaping fluid.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear youre having problems with your front wheel...

Have had similar problems myself, BUT dont think its anything to do with the brakes or callipers.

Once I left out the tube that runs thru the axle and caused me all sorts of problems - basically when you tighten up the axle, without the tube in place, the fork ends are either squashed together, or not close enough - either way the wheel doesnt run true and effectively you get brake "drag" as the callipers are out of alignment with the discs.

You can also get similar problems even if the tube is still in place - check the correct torque settings for the axle nut and try spinning the wheel when lifted off the ground - usually makes some difference.

Surprised no one else has had similar problems and really surprised that people insist on immediately stripping thier callipers for the slightest of problems!

    Hope it helps anyway >:*)
