check oil level , I suspect you may need to add oil to compensate for the additional tubes and lines from the cooler

If this is serious enough for you to be worried about ... I'd do a couple of things.

First, I'd pull the Valve Cover and look in both Cam Galleries to make SURE that there's oil getting to the Top-end of that Engine.

Then, I'd measure the Valve Clearances and try to lift the Chain off the Guide Bridge ... just to check.

If the Oil is OK and the Valves within Specs; you're probably hearing noises from the Valve Train caused by both the Oil and Block being cooler than it was before installing the Oil Cooler.

The entire Plant is running cooler because the Oil is getting cooled and the Bike able to release an ample amount of heat to the cooler temps of the outside atmosphere.

Since the Engine isn't getting as hot as it would earlier in the season, with elevated outside temps and no cooler ... It's not "Expanding" as much as it did when it it could not shed its heat as readily as it does in the Fall.

that's why i'm worried it never made the sound hot or cold now with the cooler it makes it! didn't know if I should use lighter oil or what not. or if I installed the adapter wrong but yeah i'm worried now

I am about to change out my oil for the second time before storage and I use 10w/40 Mobil 1 4T Racing oil. I initially used Castrol GTX 20w/50 because that's what I used in my Honda that I owned before this. It seems the Yamaha may be built with thghter tolerances for lubrication because I got occasional valve noise and sluggish clutch behavior. I switched to the better protection and a bit higher priced Mobil 1 and all the abnormal ticking went away. It even starts a bit easier when it's a cold night.
I'm not saying this will work for you, but it did for me. My wifes car has been running Mobil 1 since the day it rolled off the line in '95 and 105000 miles later, not one bit of main bearing noise after it's sat for days without a start which is more than I can say for some of my friends rides with less mileage!

Is it possible it hasn't fully "primed" itself yet? I agree with Rick, I would definitely pull the valve cover and have a thorough look, both at the valve clearances and for the presence of copious amounts of oil up there on both ends. I hate to say this, but in Ohio, do you really NEED an oil cooler? Might want to consider pulling it back off and see if everything is ok then. You said something about the #2 head pipe; are you sure it's a valve tick and not an exhaust leak you're hearing?

If he pulled the exhaust header, did one of the exhast gaskets fall out? Did he tighten both of the studs to proper torques?? Sounds like it's an exhaust leak. Could he have buggered up the bushing on the header, to connector?

Ohh one way to see if the oil cooler is working is to go for ride to warm the bike up. Then as soon as you stop feel the oil cooler. If it's warm, its primed up and doing it's job.
